Waymo
$196,000—$248,000 USD
United States, California, Mountain View
1600 Amphitheatre Parkway (Show on map)
Feb 13, 2026

Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the world's most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver-The World's Most Experienced Driver-to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo's fully autonomous ride-hail service and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over ten million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving over 100 million miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 15+ U.S. states.

Design at Waymo is about the total experience-not just how the product looks, but how it works, how it feels, and how we make our new technology accessible, approachable, and useful for everyone. We design the intuitive, delightful experience for our riders, and we also build the powerful, complex tools used by our fleet operations teams and the engineers who build the Waymo Driver. We are a highly multidisciplinary team of UX Designers, User and Market Researchers, UX Engineers, Content Designers, Industrial Designers, CAD Designers, Studio Engineers, and Technical Artists. We dig deep to understand the attitudes, emotions, and behaviors of all our users. This understanding serves as the foundation for everything we create.

This role follows a hybrid work schedule and you will report to a Manager of UX Engineer.

You will:

  • Product Front-End Leadership: Lead the technical design and front-end architecture for complex, high-impact internal tools, partnering with PM and UX to drive product strategy from concept to production.
  • Component System Leadership: Lead the architecture, development, and long-term strategy for the Waymo Autonomous Tools (WAT) component library and design system, ensuring it accelerates development and scales with product needs.
  • Cross-Functional Leadership: Act as the key technical bridge between UX Design, Product Management, and SWE, translating complex user needs into scalable, production-ready applications and components.
  • Standards & Best Practices: Define and evangelize front-end best practices for both our product applications and our shared libraries, and establish the strategy for technical programs like accessibility (a11y) and localization (l18n).
  • Mentorship & Amplification: Mentor other engineers and designers, amplifying the team's impact by creating reusable solutions, high-quality documentation, and scalable front-end patterns.

You have:

  • Extensive Front-End Experience: 7+ years of professional front-end or UI engineering experience, with deep, expert-level knowledge of TypeScript, Angular (or similar frameworks like React), HTML5, and CSS3 (Sass, Flexbox, Grid).
  • Production & Systems Architecture: A proven track record of architecting and building both large-scale, production-quality front-end applications and the reusable UI component libraries that power them.
  • Rigorous Testing & Code Quality: Deep experience with front-end testing frameworks (e.g., Jest, Jasmine, Karma, Cypress) and a passion for writing clean, maintainable, and well-documented code.
  • UX & Design Acumen: A strong understanding of UX principles and exceptional "design instincts," with the ability to collaborate effectively with designers and translate visual concepts into pixel-perfect code.
  • Complex Data Integration: Experience consuming data from complex backend services (e.g., REST, gRPC, GraphQL) and handling data in sophisticated, single-page applications.

We prefer:

  • Data Visualization: Experience with data visualization libraries like D3.js or similar.
  • Accessibility & Localization: Deep knowledge of web accessibility (a11y) and localization (l18n) best practices.
  • Backend Technologies: Familiarity with Protocol Buffers (protobufs) or gRPC.
  • Relevant Domain Experience: Experience building tools for complex, technical domains like autonomous vehicles, robotics, mapping, or large-scale fleet operations.
