Position Summary: Responsible for supporting engineering design and project delivery using established engineering principles and practices. Under the guidance of senior staff, this position interprets project requirements, performs technical analyses, prepares design documents, and coordinates assigned tasks with a moderate level of supervision.

JMT is seeking motivated professionals with an interest in ecological restoration, including the planning and design of stream, wetland, and habitat restoration projects and related natural resource services. This position primarily supports projects throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, with opportunities to contribute across JMT's broader geographic footprint. The Project Engineer I is expected to independently complete routine to moderately complex technical tasks, apply applicable regulatory and design guidance, and recognize when additional coordination or technical review is required.

The ideal candidate will be familiar with local, state, and federal permitting requirements, work effectively with multidisciplinary teams, communicate technical information through reports and drawings, and assist with marketing and proposal efforts supporting JMT's environmental services. This role offers a clear pathway for increasing technical responsibility and career advancement within JMT's ecological restoration practice.



Compensation for this position is $45.00 - $55.00/hour, commensurate with experience, education, and certifications. The provided range is a good faith estimate based on the requirements described within the job description. If so, the actual salary range may vary from the estimate provided.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities



  • Assess, analyze, and design stream, wetland, and ecological restoration projects, including natural habitats and ecosystems.
  • Perform hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and analysis for open channels, bridges, culverts, and drainage systems using Hec-Ras or similar modeling software.
  • Analyze and interpret survey data, maps, plans, aerial imagery, and topographic and geologic information to support project planning and design.
  • Conduct alternatives analyses to evaluate design approaches and project feasibility.
  • Develop erosion and sediment control designs, planting plans, and restoration specifications in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Design drainage infrastructure, including pipes, slopes, conveyance features, and outfalls.
  • Prepare plans, specifications, technical reports, construction cost estimates, and permitting or construction documents.
  • Complete designs in accordance with client requirements, applicable standards, and regulatory guidance, using industry standard design software.
  • Apply general engineering principles and best practices to execute assigned tasks efficiently and accurately.
  • Coordinate with internal project team members to meet established quality standards and project schedules.
  • Participate in quality control and quality assurance reviews in accordance with the Project Management Plan.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to junior staff or Design Engineers, as assigned.



Nonessential Functions and Responsibilities

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering or a related field from an ABET accredited engineering program
  • 5-10 years' experience in ecological restoration / mitigation projects
  • Proficient in discipline specific design software (MicroStation ORD and/or AutoCAD Civil 3D)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Written and communication skills



Preferred Experience



  • Professional Engineer License (preferred)
  • Rosgen or similar level training
  • Experience working with local clients at the county and state level
  • Experience with multiple project delivery methods, i.e., Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, P3
  • 2-D Modeling experience



Working Conditions

Work is performed within a general office environment 95% of the time. Work is generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional standing and walking. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. within the office environment.

Fieldwork is required on occasion, and work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions. Some lifting (up to 50 lbs) may be required as needed.
