Position Highlights

The Financial Analyst II is an integral part of the College of Medicine-Tucson finance team, responsible for providing financial analysis and financial management and operational support to departments, centers, and administrative units. This position supports core activities in budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting and analysis while ensuring compliance with institutional policies and procedures.
The Financial Analyst II assists departmental/center administrators and staff with the annual all-funds budget process and quarterly forecasting. This position is responsible for reviewing and validating financial data for accuracy, identifying and assisting in resolving discrepancies, preparing routine and ad hoc financial reports, analyzing performance to support informed operational decision-making.
This role requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, exceptional attention to detail, and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. The Financial Analyst II works collaboratively within the finance team and with internal stakeholders, applies established principles and analytical tools, and escalates complex or unusual issues as appropriate. Proficiency in Excel and financial reporting tools is essential.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Serve as a key point of contact within the finance team for the annual All-Funds budgeting and quarterly forecasting for the departments, centers and administrative units within the College of Medicine-Tucson. Responsibilities include providing financial analysis to ensure accuracy and compliance at the College-level, supporting the development and implementation of standardized processes, assisting departmental and center staff on the logistical preparation of budgets and forecasts utilizing college budgeting tools and processes, resolving discrepancies and addressing areas of concern, while ensuring efficiency of financial data input into the University budget system.
  • Monitor and analyze the financial performance of the College of Medicine departments' and centers' actual performance against budget, financial targets, other key indicators and compliance metrics. Identify, assess and analyze significant variances in financial results, and communicate findings and potential considerations to finance leadership.
  • Conduct ad-hoc financial and/or budget analysis for college and/or departmental operational and planning needs. Provide financial insights and performance metrics, to support informed financial management and process improvement efforts. Support college finance leadership in the implementation of financial plans and strategies.
  • Support annual budget activities as it relates to the College's allocation model and/or other areas within Medicine administration, ensuring alignment with goals and priorities.
  • Generate monthly or quarterly budget/financial reports, ensuring accuracy and providing insight into expenditure trends and identifying opportunities for refinement and follow-up in coordination with senior analysts.
  • Prepare, analyze, monitor, and forecast financial or operational data for college finance leadership and internal stakeholders to support data-informed decision-making.
  • Maintain, refine, and enhance various financial schedules and reporting protocols for administration, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with financial goals and regulations, in alignment with established best practices.
  • Perform reconciliations to ensure expenses and revenue are accurately reported, aligned with budget plans, and compliant with financial reporting.
  • Coordinate with main campus units, such as the Finance & Budget offices, and provide support to departments and centers on various financial matters, addressing questions, assisting with issue resolution, and providing guidance within established policies and procedures. Apply functional knowledge to support budgeting, expense and account management, financial analysis and reporting, and policy compliance.
  • Using advanced Excel skills, prepare and analyze various ad hoc financial reports, as needed.
  • Assist with processing financial transactions while ensuring proper documentation and adherence to policies and procedures, as needed.
  • Assist with compiling data and analysis for institutional and industry benchmark surveys, as needed.
  • Participate in other college initiatives and projects, as needed, in support of college and departmental financial operations.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proficient skills in Excel and other Microsoft programs.
  • Knowledge of accounting practices, procedures and generally accepted accounting principles.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.
  • Ability to analyze financial data and identify trends, variances and opportunities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task projects and daily assignments.
  • Self starter and strong problem solving abilities.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience are required.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, or related field.
  • Experience at an academic institution and managing state, discretionary, sponsored and gift funds.
  • Experience working with federal grants and sponsor requirements.
  • Experience with UAccess (Analytics, Financials, UAccess Employee) and knowledge of UA policies and procedures.
