POSITION SPECIFICS

Assistant Professor, Non-Tenure Track Faculty Pediatric Oncology Translational Research Lab (POTRL) Department of Pediatrics, Penn State College of Medicine, Hershey, PA Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium (BCC)

The Department of Pediatrics at Penn State College of Medicine invites applications for a non-tenure line Assistant Professor to join the Sholler Laboratory and the Beat Childhood Cancer Research Consortium within the Pediatric Oncology Translational Research Lab. This position seeks an accomplished scientist who will develop a vigorous, independent research program focused on therapeutic discovery and translational approaches in pediatric cancer. The successful candidate will contribute to the department's growing strengths in molecular oncology, precision therapeutics, and advanced preclinical modeling that supports BCC's national clinical trials network.

Position Summary

The Assistant Professor will establish and sustain an independently funded research program while engaging in collaborative studies across the institution and with BCC partner sites. The successful candidate will lead high-impact research projects, publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at national conferences, and advance discoveries that can move efficiently from lab to clinic. This role also includes mentoring trainees and contributing to the academic mission of the Department of Pediatrics.

Key Responsibilities

* Develop and maintain a competitive independent research program aligned with pediatric oncology and translational therapeutics

* Pursue and secure extramural research funding from federal agencies, foundations, or other sponsors

* Design and direct preclinical or translational studies that support therapeutic development, biological target discovery, and integration with BCC clinical research

* Publish scientific findings in high-impact journals and present work at national and international conferences

* Collaborate with investigators across disciplines, including clinical oncology, genomics, pharmacology, and data science

* Mentor students, fellows, and laboratory staff in experimental design, analysis, and professional development

* Contribute to teaching within the College of Medicine and provide service to the department and institution

* Ensure compliance with institutional, federal, and sponsor research policies

Minimum Qualifications

* Ph.D., M.D., or M.D./Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, oncology, or a related field

* Strong record of scientific productivity demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications

* Demonstrated expertise in cancer biology, signal transduction, target validation, therapeutic development, or related fields

* Evidence of grant-writing experience and potential to secure extramural research funding

* Excellent written and verbal communication skills

* Commitment to mentorship, education, and fostering an inclusive and collaborative research environment

This position requires the following clearances in addition to applicable background checks: PA State Police Criminal Background Check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance Form, and Federal (FBI) Fingerprint Criminal Background Check.
