Job Summary

The Financial Analyst reports to the Controller for the Department of Medicine (DOM) and is responsible for:

  1. Budgetary and financial management of the clinical enterprise for three to four of the Department's 13 clinical divisions at its Parnassus / Mt. Zion sites, comprising about 1/3 of the Department's $167 million clinical enterprise
  2. Management of $6.2 million of 149 annual commitments made to the Divisions
  3. Ad hoc financial analysis and decision support where typical assignment would involve using skills as a seasoned, experienced professional with a full understanding of industry practices and organizational policies and procedures, resolving a wide range of issues in imaginative as well as practical ways. Works on problems of diverse scope where analysis of data requires evaluation of identifiable factors. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $81,300 - $172,300 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department in the School of Medicine (SOM) at UCSF. The mission of the Department includes research, teaching, patient care, and public service. The DOM has an annual budget of ~$892M across three sites with ~2,900 employees. The DOM comprises 27% of all UCSF faculty, 29% of the SOM's faculty, and 20% of the SOM budget. For the past 30 years, the DOM has consistently ranked among the top four departments of medicine in the country, and in the last several years, the department has been the number one recipient of NIH research dollars. The DOM has 20 ACGME and 24 non-ACGME fellowship programs, and its internal medicine residency has consistently been ranked as one of the top programs in the country.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and three or more years of relevant experience and / or equivalent experience / training
  • Thorough knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems
  • Ability to independently gather required information to organize and perform financial analysis assignments
  • Proven ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing in a clear and concise manner
  • Proven ability using spreadsheet and database software for complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports
  • Proven interpersonal skills with peers throughout the organization; strong service orientation and critical thinking skills; and attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to multi-task in a high-volume environment
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Ability to function as a member of a team

Preferred Qualifications


  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources
