OVERVIEW:

The Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Performance is a leadership position responsible for the development, coordination, and daily operation of the school's Sports Performance program and the Athletic and Wellness Center. This role provides programmatic oversight of sports performance, strength and conditioning, wellness programming, and facility operations, ensuring safe, effective, and mission-aligned use of the school's athletic resources.

Working closely with the Director of Athletics, head coaches, and the Counseling and Wellness teams, the Assistant Director supports student-athlete development through intentional programming that integrates physical performance, injury prevention, recovery, and mental performance. This position combines strategic planning with hands-on instruction, teaching, and supervision, and plays a key role in supporting both athletic excellence and student well-being across the school community.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Strategy & Department Management

  • Managing all aspects of the new Athletics and Wellness Center, including reserving and staffing all spaces.

  • Providing a clear vision for the Sport Performance Department, including supporting programming of the newly renovated Athletic and Wellness Center.

  • Coordinate regularly with the counseling and Wellness Team to facilitate conversations/trainings around mental performance

  • Build out robust sport science/athlete monitoring for deliverables to head coaches, in coordination with the athletic department

  • Ensure early morning, school day, late evenings, and summer hours and duties of the position are covered by either the Assistant Director or Part-Time Sports Performance Trainer

  • Training, scheduling, and supervising the part-time sports performance trainer.

  • Managing all sports performance partnerships to have the best-in-class partnerships

  • Serving on Athletics Advisory Team (Head Coach Group)

  • Coordinate school programming and curriculum to meet school values

  • Ordering all weight room supplies for the year with a budget approval from the Director of Athletics

  • Running seasonal strength, conditioning, and performance afternoon activities

Teaching

  • Teaching Upper and Middle school sports performance classes

  • Teach MS Elective Class

  • Teach Employee Group Training (in conjunction with the part-time Sports Performance Trainer)

Student Performance Management

  • Critiquing and supervising student-athletes in the use of free-weight, equipment-based, and body-weight resistive exercise.

  • Educating student-athletes on proper lifting techniques of free weights and machine lifting.

  • Developing, monitoring, and instructing speed, agility, and conditioning programs for designated sports.

    • Each sport will have specific criteria depending on the demands of the sport at the time of year, relative to its playing season.

  • Tracking student-athlete progress on a digital platform, developing a file system, and adjusting workouts depending on the gains of each individual and the season of lifting that the student-athlete is in.

    • Building and maintaining the student fitness archive

  • Giving special attention to developing individual and team goals in pre-season, off-season, during season, and postseason.

  • Programming and support for teams, student-athletes, non-athletic programs, and employees

  • Writing and coaching general fitness classes for students who are not participating in athletics

  • Advising coaches and athletes on nutrition, recovery, injury prevention, and mindset development

  • Oversee summer plans for the Athletic and Wellness Center

Other

  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

  • Additional school-day student-facing activity (e.g., advisory, club, elective, ECE initiative, etc), as agreed by the Director of Athletics

QUALIFICAITONS

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sports Performance, Athletic Training, or a related field

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in sports performance, strength and conditioning, or athletic development, preferably in an educational or Middle/Upper School environment

  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing age-appropriate strength, conditioning, and performance programs

  • Experience supervising or leading teams, preferred

  • Strong knowledge of injury prevention, recovery strategies, and safe training practices for adolescents

  • Ability to work non-traditional hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and summer months

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field

  • Member of NSCA - National Strength and Conditioning Association

  • Experience working in independent schools or 6-12 educational settings

  • Familiarity with sport science tools, athlete monitoring platforms, and data-informed performance programming

  • Experience collaborating with wellness, counseling, or medical professionals
