The Position
Title: Head of Commercial, Medical and Government (CMG) Affairs Strategy & Activation and Chief of Staff To Genentech CEO Hiring Supervisor: Ashley Magargee Level: Vice President Location: South San Francisco. Position Summary: This unique and pivotal role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and is responsible for leading a diverse portfolio of functions critical to our enterprise-wide success. This role serves as a strategic partner to the CEO, while also directly overseeing our core Learning & Skills Development, Strategy & Activation, and Change Leadership teams. Act as a key strategic partner and advisor to the CEO, helping to prioritize initiatives, manage the flow of information, and facilitate effective decision-making. Serve as a liaison and communication hub between the CEO, senior leadership, and key internal and external stakeholders. Influence CEO's agenda and priorities, ensuring strategic alignment across the organization. Lead large scale change and execute high-priority, cross-functional projects on behalf of the CEO within Genentech and globally within Roche. Recognised as a critical thought partner for CEO, US Leadership Team (USLT) and Genentech Executive Committee (GEC) given extensive business background, deep understanding of the organizational dynamics, external landscape and breadth of internal network. Guides Commercial, Medical and Government Affairs (CMG) Chiefs of Staff / Ops Leads (dotted line) to develop, advance and maintain key business processes and knowledge management solutions to support effective decision making, knowledge sharing, project team management, and commercial optimization to drive the business forward. Leads a team focused on strategy implementation and business excellence.
Learning & Skills Development
Oversee the development and execution of the 3,500 person workforce learning strategy. Direct the design and implementation of impactful development programs. Collaborate with business leaders and Learning & Skills Development leadership to address skill gaps through targeted upskilling and reskilling initiatives.
Strategy & Activation - Enterprise-wide leadership across Commercial, Medical and Government Affairs (CMG), Genentech & Roche:
Drive the development and execution of the corporate strategy, translating long-term vision into actionable plans and initiatives. Lead the activation of strategic plans across the organization, ensuring alignment and accountability. Drives actions and follow ups, manages and supports key CMG-wide strategic initiatives, including goals, business outcomes and shaping mindsets and behaviors befitting of a high performance organization. Utilizes analytics and key feedback loops to provide insight on organizational performance, trends both internally and externally, to help the CEO and USLT make informed decisions. Supports the CEO on business goals and priorities for their roles in CMG / GEC, as a member of PLT and for enterprise-wide interactions and contributions across Roche. Represents CMG and Genentech on key corporate task forces and committees as needed (e.g. including Business Continuity Management, Corporate risk management, One Pharma Strategy pull through, One Pharma Strategy Enabling Team and enterprise technology support).
Change Leadership
Oversee the enterprise-wide change management framework, guiding the organization through significant business transformations. Develop and implement effective change communication plans to ensure all employees understand the rationale and impact of strategic changes. Partner with P&C and business leaders to build change leadership capabilities throughout the company.
Education, Experience & Capability Requirements
University degree in science or business is required, advanced degree or equivalent is desired 15+ years in drug development, life sciences, and/or healthcare industry Proven senior executive leader who understands the cross-portfolio marketplace, competitive landscape and technology requirements to sustain operating results Well developed project manager to lead in an organized and disciplined way from ideation to execution, including sustained pull through with measurable impact Exhibits keen organizational and political acumen to grasp the challenges faced by the CEO in driving change, and identifies effective strategies to alleviate these pressures Ability to recognize what relationships are most important to the success of the leadership agenda and look for ways to strengthen across GNE and Roche (e.g. USLT-1 and GEC-1) Strategic communicator adept at refining the CEO message and ability to translate across broad audience base Ability to proactively anticipate challenges and avert potential crisis situations (such as that CEO intervention is not required) Amplifies and adds value to the Genentech leadership agenda Exceptional influencing skills by having a proven track record of helping internal / external stakeholders address strategic opportunities and solve problems Demonstrated examples of balancing strategic decision-making, innovative thinking and pragmatic approaches to overseeing large scale change (e.g. multi-function / enterprise level)
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of San Francisco, CA is 338,330 - 430,290. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
