The laboratory of Dr. Stephane Dissel in the School of Science and Engineering at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is looking to recruit a postdoctoral fellow to join our team. We have recently identified two new sleep-promoting neurons located in the fly equivalent of the spinal cord, the ventral nerve cord (VNC) (https://journals.plos.org/plosbiology/article?id=10.1371/journal.pbio.3002012). The successful candidate will be involved with further characterization of these VNC-SP (for VNC Sleep-Promoting) neurons on a NIH funded grant. In particular, the successful candidate will employ a variety of techniques, including Drosophila genetics, behavioral assays, confocal microscopy, live-brain imaging and neural circuits mapping and manipulation, to identify the molecular mechanisms used by VNC-SP neurons to regulate sleep as well as their presynaptic inputs and postsynaptic partners. Previous experience with Drosophila genetics and neurobiology, confocal microscopy, and live-brain imaging is desirable, but not essential. The successful candidate will be organized and communicate effectively. They will be expected to take a leading role in this research project, regularly present their progress, publish their findings, and participate in conferences. Salary is commensurate with experience. This is a 12-month, full-time, benefit-eligible unranked academic position. Qualifications
A PhD or equivalent in biology, neurobiology, neuroscience, or genetics or a related field. Anticipated Hiring Range
