Responsibilities

The Recreation Therapist Supervisor role is a "working supervisor" position. The role will perform duties associated with that of a Recreation Therapist as detailed below. In addition, the Recreation Therapist Supervisor is a member of the facility supervisory/management team and has primary, first-line responsibility for the direct supervision of the on-shift Recreation Therapy staff at the facility. In general, the Recreation Therapist Supervisor is accountable for the performance of the supervised Recreation Therapy staff in the (a) delivery of patient care as well as (b) compliance with facility polices, processes, and procedures, governmental regulations and licensing requirements related to that care. In addition, the Recreation Therapist Supervisor serves as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team and to support the facility's treatment program and philosophy. Specific duties, and key job responsibilities related to the Recreation Therapist Supervisor role include, but may not be limited to, those detailed below.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Identifies potential possible performance or misconduct issues among supervised Recreational Therapy staff.
  • Identify performance or misconduct issues among supervised Recreational Therapy staff.
  • Documents performance or misconduct issues among supervised Recreational Therapy staff.
  • Investigates, or assists in the investigations of, performance or misconduct issues among supervised Recreational Therapy staff.
  • Recommends to, and collaborates with Recreational Therapy Manager as to training, correctional, counseling, or disciplinary action (including level of appropriate discipline) in response to performance or misconduct issues among supervised Recreational Therapy staff.
  • In the absence of the Recreational Therapy Manager, will assume responsibility of the Manager position when requested.
  • Be a part of, and work with, interdisciplinary leadership team to support rules and expectations, communicating plans for activities in advance, bringing concerns or input in support of the therapeutic milieu

  • Provides guidance, training, and constructive feedback to Recreational Therapy staff to promote professional growth and team cohesion.
  • Assume responsibility as assigned, and otherwise participate in, assist, and partners with Recreational Therapy Manager in the orientation and on-the-job training for new Recreational Therapy employees including the evaluation of the new employee's ability to perform the job consistent with facility policy, procedures, and regulations.
  • Determine, and otherwise participate in, assist, and partners with Recreational Therapy Manager in determining whether to terminate the new hire during the training and orientation process, to extend probational / new hire training period, facilitate coaching and/or determine if additional training is needed.
  • Attend and participate in facility leadership meetings.
  • Successfully complete trainings required of facility management team members.
  • Ensures Recreational Therapy employees are assigned duties and responsibilities to the level of their expertise, licensure or certification.
  • Assumes responsibility as assigned, and otherwise participates in, assist, and partners with Recreational Therapy Manager to evaluate the job performance of supervised staff according to established policy and procedure.
  • Be available and responsive to job related concerns raised by the Recreational Therapy staff.

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Ability to perform assignments with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work successfully under highly stressful conditions
  • Ability to make sound, independent judgments based on scientific and/or ethical principles
  • Capability of adapting to varying workloads and work assignments on a constant basis
  • Effective comprehensive reading skills, strong communication skills, written and verbal
  • Must have a working knowledge of computers

GENERAL WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Working conditions for all employees are as follows, but not limited to a psychiatric hospital setting; some risk involved in the event of aggressive patient(s); work load may include day, evening, night, weekend and/or holiday shifts. Employees occasionally exposed to blood borne pathogens, and loud noise levels.Mental demands described herein are representative of those which must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job, but are not limited to the ability to remain calm in a stressful environment; and the emotional stability, physical stamina and agility to handle stress and respond quickly and effectively to emergency situations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Requirements include, but are not limited to the ability to communicate effectively with employees; the ability to effectively utilize communication equipment; the physical agility to manage cleaning equipment; the ability to read, write.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF THE POSITON:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Therapeutic Recreation or related fieldandexperience in activity therapy and recreation facilitation required.
  • Therapeutic Skills: Proficiency in providing psychotherapeutic services.
  • Current national registration as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred.
  • 1-2 years of Activity/Recreational Therapy experience required.
  • Supervisory or management experience is strongly preferred.
  • Communication: Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Must be willing and able to execute the patient de-escalation methods, both verbal and physical.
  • Must be able to complete new hire requirements such as State of Alaska Background Check and Drug Testing.
  • Must be able to demonstrate special training, knowledge and skills specific to age groups, as well as job and/or program specific competency within the first three (3) months of training.
  • Must be certified in CPR and Handle with Care within the first month of training and annually thereafter.
  • Must complete all mandatory in-services annually.
  • Must be tested for Tuberculosis with a PPD skin test or chest x-ray upon hire; PPD skin test required annually or chest x-ray annually thereafter.
