Job Description

MU Division of Finance and Business Services has overall responsibility for creating a financial environment on campus that meets our fiduciary responsibilities, demonstrates stewardship and meets regulatory requirements.

The Director of Space Planning & Management participates in institution-wide strategy, governance, and operations for academic, research, administrative, auxiliary, and student-life space. This role advises policies and standards, oversees space inventory and utilization analytics and partners with campus stakeholders to align space decisions with institutional mission, enrollment, research growth, and fiscal sustainability. The Director is a trusted advisor to senior leadership and a key integrator across Facilities, Capital Projects, Finance, Academic Affairs, Research, and IT.

Strategic Planning, Governance & Engagement
* Serve as the primary liaison to deans, department chairs, PIs, and administrative leaders for space requests, leading to evaluation and recommendations for negotiation.
* Facilitate transparent processes for competing priorities; communicate rationales, tradeoffs, and decisions.
* Monitor space allocation policies, standards, and decision frameworks.
* Lead multi-year space scenarios and options analyses to support capital planning, decanting, surge space, and program growth.
* Provide support to the Campus Space Committee
* Support Senior Director for Capital, Property and Space Planning.

Space Analytics & Reporting
* Direct and hold primary accountability for the institutional space inventory (rooms, assignments, functions, square footage, seating counts) and classification standards
* Design and deliver utilization studies (occupancy, scheduling, density, time-of-day) to recommend optimization strategies.
* Identify and produce reports and presentations necessary to support a variety of compliance obligations at the campus and system level

Programming & Project Enablement
* Translate academic/research program needs into space programs and test-fits
* Provide planning input across project life cycles; collaborate with Capital Planning and Campus Facilities on scope, cost, phasing, risk, and change management.

Departmental responsibilities
* Implement and manage space management software, data governance, and integration with HR, Finance, Scheduling, and other systems.
* Direct the maintenance of floor plans, CAD standards, room attributes
* Lead and develop a team of planners, analysts, CAD/BIM specialists, establish KPIs and service standards.
* Foster a culture of collaboration, equity, data-driven decision-making, and continuous improvement.

Shift

8-5pm, additional hours as needed

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 7 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree and/or professional registration in the field of business administration, architecture, interior architecture, or planning.

Demonstrated experience in building and leading a team of professionals.

Background in using political acumen and negotiation skills to reach goals.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $115,000.00 - $150,000.00 annually
