Join us in Mansfield as a Staff R&D Engineer and help shape the next generation of soft tissue and bone healing therapies. What will you be doing?

  • Leading research and technology project teams, providing technical direction and mentoring to engineers

  • Driving concept development, prototyping, product design, feasibility work and verification testing, including writing protocols and reports

  • Developing and validating biomechanical and biological test methods for sports medicine repair devices

  • Creating and maintaining design control documentation including risk assessments, usability, user needs and design inputs

  • Engaging with customers, including surgeons and commercial teams, to understand user needs and observe procedures

  • Supporting patent activities, competitive analysis and product performance testing

  • Guiding products through development phases supporting scale up toward commercialization

What will you need to be successful?

  • BS degree with 12 years experience, MS with 8 years or PhD with 4 years in engineering, science or related field, or equivalent combination

  • Strong expertise in product design, prototyping and testing

  • Ability to work independently, applying sound judgment and offering innovative solutions

  • Experience developing test methodologies and authoring technical documentation

  • Strong communication skills for presenting research internally and externally

  • Knowledge of design controls and regulatory expectations including PMA and BLA pathways

  • Advanced statistical analysis skills including Minitab

The anticipated base compensation range for this position is $125,500- $217,750 USD annually (or hourly) The actual base pay offered to the successful candidate will be based on multiple factors, including but not limited to job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at the high end of the range for their role at Smith + Nephew. Compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each position and candidate. In addition to base pay, we provide competitive bonus and benefits, which include medical, dental, and vision coverage, 401k, tuition reimbursement, medical leave programs, parental leave, and generous PTO, paid company holidays annually and 8 hours of Volunteer time and a variety of wellness offerings such as EAP.
