Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Research Statistician at UL Research Institutes, based in our Morrisville, NC office.

The Senior Research Statistician will be responsible for providing statistical leadership and expertise to support the Underwriters Laboratories Research Institutes' (ULRI) Chemical Insights mission to provide unbiased research on chemicals and their risks to people's health. This role is responsible for designing statistically sound studies, analyzing complex datasets, and ensuring scientific rigor across interdisciplinary research projects. The Senior Research Statistician collaborates closely with internal scientists, data professionals, and external partners to deliver high-quality scientific outputs that inform chemical safety, risk assessment, regulatory policy, and public awareness.

What you'll learn and achieve:

As the Senior Research Statistician, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Design and implement advanced statistical methodologies to support experimental, observational, and longitudinal research studies related to chemical exposure and environmental health including dose-response modeling.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional research teams to define research questions, hypotheses, sampling strategies, and statistical analysis plans.

  • Conduct descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including regression modeling, mixed-effects models, multivariate analysis, and uncertainty analysis.

  • Perform power calculations and sample size determinations to support study design, grant proposals, and research protocols.

  • Develop machine learning and other predictive models for chemical toxicity, exposure, and risk assessment.

  • Clean, validate, and manage complex datasets to ensure data accuracy, completeness, and reproducibility.

  • Interpret statistical results and translate findings into clear, scientifically defensible conclusions for technical reports, peer-reviewed publications, and stakeholder communications.

  • Support the development of manuscripts, technical reports, and presentations, including contributing statistical methods sections and addressing peer review feedback.

  • Ensure adherence to research standards, data governance policies, and ethical and regulatory requirements (e.g., NIH, NSF, IRB).

  • Develop and maintain documentation of statistical methods, analysis workflows, assumptions, and limitations to promote transparency and reproducibility.

  • Collaborate with data engineers, data scientists, and analysts to support data integration, analysis readiness, and effective use of research data.

  • Provide statistical consultation and technical support to internal stakeholders throughout the research lifecycle.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Expert knowledge in statistical theory and applied research methodologies such as mixed-effects models, survival analysis, Bayesian inference, and survey statistics.

  • Proficiency in predictive modeling using machine learning.

  • Demonstrated ability to design and analyze research studies using appropriate statistical techniques.

  • Proficiency in statistical programming and analysis tools such as R, SAS, SPSS, or similar software with a preference for R.

  • Proven track record in analyzing and interpreting high-dimensional data (e.g., thousands of biological responses) using feature selection or regularization to avoid overfitting.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with large, complex, and multi-source datasets.

  • Knowledge of data quality, validation, and reproducibility best practices.

  • Ability to communicate complex statistical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and commitment to scientific rigor.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary research environments.

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Ph.D. in Statistics, Biostatistics, Mathematics, or a related quantitative field.

  • Minimum 8 years of experience post degree in applying statistical methods in a research-focused environment.

  • Demonstrated experience with toxicology, toxicokinetics, and chemical exposure data.

  • Proven track record supporting research documentation, reporting, and publication efforts.
