Position Summary

Responsible for performing advanced inspection, maintenance, and repairs on marine and offshore knuckle boom cranes while leading Knuckle Boom Crane Operators. This role is accountable for crane reliability and safety, compliance with regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA, ASME B30, API RP 2D, USCG), and execution of lift plans across yard and offshore operations. Serves as the technical authority for cranes ensuring safe lifts, timely maintenance, and operational excellence.


Duties And Responsibilities

TECHNICAL :

  • Perform troubleshooting, diagnostics, and corrective maintenance on mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical crane systems (e.g., pedestal cranes, lattice boom, knuckle boom, telescopic, crawler, and yard cranes).
  • Execute inspection programs and maintain documentation (daily, monthly, quarterly, annual) per ASME B30 and API RP 2D; coordinate 3rd-party annual certs when required.
  • Maintain hoisting equipment (wire rope, sheaves, hooks, blocks), hydraulic pumps, valves, cylinders, slew bearings, PLC/controls, load moment indicators (LMI), and safety interlocks.
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, service manuals, and OEM bulletins; perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage spare parts inventory and work orders; ensure CMMS/PMS tasks are planned and closed out with quality notes and photos.
  • Support rigging selection and inspection; verify SWL/WLL, sling angles, D/d ratios, and center-of-gravity considerations for complex lifts.
  • Lead Knuckle Boom Crane Operators: scheduling, pre-job briefs. Assist with competency assessments, on-the-job training, and performance management.
  • Develop and review lift plans (routine and non-routine); lead Job Safety Analyses (JSA) and Toolbox Talks; enforce stop-work authority.
  • Monitor operator performance, adherence to SOPs, and compliance with site, client, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with Operations, HSE, and Projects to align crane availability with job schedules; minimize downtime and rework.
  • Conduct incident/near-miss investigations and lead corrective actions; communicate lessons learned.
  • Champion a strong safety culture; ensure compliance with OSHA, Regulatory, ASME B30, API RP 2D, and company policies.
  • Maintain certifications, training records, and inspection logs; prepare for audits and client verifications.

Qualifications

REQUIRED:

  • At least 5 years experience as a Crane Technician/Mechanic in marine, offshore, heavy industrial, or oil & gas environments.
  • Demonstrated experience leading operators or maintenance teams.
  • Strong expertise in hydraulics, mechanical systems, electrical/PLC controls, rigging, and LMI/calibration.
  • Proficiency with CMMS/PMS (e.g., SAP, eMaint, Fiix) and digital documentation.
  • Valid TWIC and ability to obtain offshore certifications as required.
  • Strong communication skills; can brief crews, write accurate reports, and coach operators.

PREFERRED/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • NCCCO or equivalent crane operator certifications (telescopic boom, lattice boom, tower, etc.)-or ability to obtain.
  • API RP 2D operator/inspector training (offshore pedestal cranes).
  • Rigging & signalperson certifications (e.g., NCCCO Rigger/Signalperson).
  • OEM-specific training (e.g., Liebherr, NOV, Palfinger, Huisman, MacGregor).
  • Basic PLC/HMI diagnostics, CANbus familiarity, and load monitoring systems (A2B/LMI).
  • OSHA 10/30, HUET/THUET, SafGulf/SafeLand (as applicable), First Aid/CPR.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position is considered OFFSHORE WORK which is characterized as follows.

  • Outdoors and indoors, day and night, as well as over/near water.
  • Requires working on or near moving equipment and vibrating equipment.
  • Frequently the humidity is above 90%, noise is over 85 decibels and the light is intense/glare.
  • Potential exposure to open fire/flames/sparks.
  • Constant exposure to airborne dust, fumes, and gases.
  • Work surface is stable, height is elevated.
