General Description

A Pile Driver Operator installs piles of steel, concrete, or wood by hammering or vibrating them into the ground.

Key Duties



  • Operate pile drivers mounted on skids, barges, crawler treads, or locomotive cranes to drive pilings
  • Moves hand and foot levers to control hoisting equipment to position piling leads, hoist piling into leads, and position hammer over piling
  • Moves levers and turns valves to activate power hammer or raise and lower drop hammer which drives piles to required depth
  • Retaining walls, bulkheads, and foundations of structures, such as structures, bridges
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance bridges
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and the appropriate tools to construct objects, structures, bridges
  • Knowledge of various methods for describing the location and distribution of land and air masses including their physical locations, relationships, and characteristics
  • Controlling operations of equipment or systems
  • Watch gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine is working properly
  • Critical Thinking by using logic and analysis to identify the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches
  • Judgment and Decision Making by weighing the relative costs and benefits of a potential action
  • Coordination by adjusting actions in relation to others' actions
    Performing routine maintenance and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed
  • Understanding written sentences and paragraphs in work related documents and equipment
  • The ability to quickly and repeatedly make precise adjustments in moving the controls of machine or vehicle to exact positions
  • Depth Perception by the ability to judge which of several objects is closer or farther away from the observer, or to judge the distance between an object and the observer
  • Response Orientation The ability to choose quickly and correctly between two or more movements in response to two or more signals (lights, sounds, pictures, etc.). It includes the speed with which the correct response is started with the hand, foot, or other body parts
  • Repairing and Maintaining Mechanical Equipment
  • Fixing, servicing, aligning, setting up, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily on the basis of mechanical (not electronic) principles
  • Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience. This position typically is not an entry-level job.



  • Requires demonstrable previous experience as a Pile Driver Operator.
  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is preferred.
  • Must be able to understand work directions and communicate effectively with job site supervisors and fellow employees.
  • One (1) year or more of industry related experience is required for this position, with an emphasis on roads, highways, and bridges.


Physical Demands. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by a Pile Driver Operator to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.



  • Constant physical effort, including standing, is required during a regular work shift of at least eight hours per day. Employee must be able to stand for extended periods of time, and to stoop, bend, and crouch as required to perform Key Duties.
  • Work is often performed at heights up to 60 feet, requiring the employee to climb ladders, scaffolds and stair towers, often with narrow steps and passageways.
  • Ability to lift and carry, on a frequent basis, at least 25 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity to hand-carry generators, lumber and other construction materials, forms, power tools, and hand tools.
  • Capable of operating concrete vibrators for extended periods of time.
  • Physical dexterity to pour, grade and finish concrete, involving stretching, proper placement of legs, and use of arms and hands in repetitive motions.
  • Maintain constant alertness to the multiple concurrent activities of the construction site, including the activities of other employees and contractors, the operation of stationary equipment, and the movement of mobile equipment.
  • Frequently walk on uneven surfaces, including natural ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Sufficient skill and visual acuity, under varying degrees of light, darkness, and weather conditions, to provide direction and flagging for operators of cranes with rated capacities of up to 300 tons.
  • Capable of safely and productively operating a man-lift.
  • Ability to maintain balance while working on water craft or other surfaces.
  • The Operator must be able to climb on and off heavy mobile equipment safely.


Work Environment. The work environment characteristics described below are representative of those that a Pile Driver Operator encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.



  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Work environment periodically exposes the employees to high levels of noise, grease, and dust that is typically associated with a construction project.
  • Employee regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.
  • Work may involve a variety of substances commonly found on construction sites such as form oil, grease, curing compounds, gasoline, diesel fuel and ready mixed concrete.
