Tool Design Engineer

The Tool Design Engineer is responsible for reading and
interpreting customer drawings, specifications, and model-based definitions
(MBD) and creating tool designs to best meet these requirements. They will
serve as a technical resource available to manufacturing concerning tool usage,
tool improvements, and other special projects, working cooperatively as a member of an Integrated Product Team that
includes Business Management, Project and Manufacturing Engineering, Supply
Chain and Quality personnel.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Knowledgeable with specifications, engineering blueprints, model-based definitions, tool orders, and shop data and confers with engineering and shop personnel to resolve design problems related to material characteristics, dimensional tolerances, service requirements, manufacturing procedures, and cost.
  • Reviews all requests for new tools from the shop floor and requests for tooling repairs or modifications. Determines necessary course of action and initiates Tool Orders to address the request including related instructions, sketches, and engineering drawings and information.
  • Understands and works priorities of the company and customers to support the goal of the team.
  • Provides guidance for Tool Design Team to support all aspects of daily operating.
  • Tracks and manages data as it pertains to all aspects of Tooling, including but not limited to Tool Design Metrics, Tool Design Accuracy, Vendor Pricing, Tooling Design Time, and others as required.
  • Works with the Tooling/Machining work center or outside contractors to resolve conflicts or issues that may arise as a result of performing tool manufacturing, repairs or modifications.
  • Works with Supply Chain to outsource tooling fabrication, repairs, or modifications that are beyond the facility's capacity or abilities.
  • Addresses shop floor producibility issues, especially those where poor or faulty tooling may be the root cause.
  • Works with engineering staff to determine and design new tooling requirements and provide input to manufacturing concept.
  • Provides MBD designs, sketches, drawings, and support as needed to Manufacturing Engineers, Tooling/Machining, and outside contractors regarding manufacture of new tooling.
  • Processes expert in manufacturing processes, including, but not limited to Machining, Forming, Welding, and Assembly.
  • Possesses a complete understanding of Cartesian coordinate systems and general aircraft structures.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of aero-structures, regardless of manufacturer.
  • Performs Reverse Engineering Functions utilizing any data available.
  • Acts as a resource in Estimate process to define work process.
  • Understands the balance of Cost vs. Function to provide the overall best value to the organization.
  • Leads in the development or implementation of new or non-traditional manufacturing technologies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required by the position.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university is required.
  • 5 to 8 years of experience in a tooling/machining environment in the sheet metal industry.
  • CATIA experience is desired.
  • Proven leader in manufacturing environments where tool design skill set was utilized.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment to support customer and internal deadlines.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, procedure manuals, correspondence, and memos, operating and maintenance instructions.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively before larger groups of people as required, which may include customers, vendors and the internal team.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Problem solving techniques and skills which would include collecting data, establish facts, and drawing valid conclusions.
  • Knowledge of material properties and characteristics to support process implementation.
  • Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk or sit.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Annual baseline hearing test is required.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

This is a generic job posting for a Tool Design Engineer. Depending on the candidate's skills, qualifications and experience, they will be hired into an entry (I) level, intermediate (II) level or expert (III) level job and pay scale.

Pay Range: $65,000-101,000/year
