Quest Diagnostics is seeking a highly motivated Industrial Engineering Intern to support automation and operations initiatives within our automated medical testing laboratory. This internship is focused on building a high-level simulation model of laboratory operations to identify bottlenecks, evaluate capacity, and test operational scenarios without disrupting live production.

This role provides hands-on experience in a high volume, highly automated clinical laboratory environment. The intern will report directly to the Lead Industrial Engineer within the Lab Operations Department to develop a discrete event simulation model incorporating instruments, buffers, automation track logic, and routing rules.

Responsibilities:

Primary Responsibilities

  • Develop a high-level capacity simulation model of laboratory automation systems

  • Collect and analyze production data including instrument throughput, buffer capacity, routing logic, and process flow timing

  • Translate real world laboratory processes into simulation logic

  • Identify bottlenecks, system constraints, and capacity limitations

  • Build scenario testing capabilities to evaluate staffing levels, volume fluctuations, equipment changes, and process improvements

  • Perform statistical analysis to validate assumptions and model inputs

  • Provide weekly progress updates and deliver a final presentation summarizing findings and recommendations

Qualifications:

Technical Requirements

  • Completion of Junior year in Industrial Engineering.

  • Completion of coursework in Simulation and Statistics

  • Experience with discrete event simulation software such as Arena, Simio, FlexSim, AnyLogic, or equivalent

  • Strong data analysis skills

  • Ability to work with large datasets and translate data into modeling inputs

  • Understanding process flow mapping, routing logic, and system capacity concepts

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in Arena Simulation or simulation software

  • Experience with Python or coding-based simulation tools

  • Advanced Excel modeling skills

  • Familiarity with statistical validation techniques

What You Will Gain

  • Direct experience modeling complex automation in a clinical laboratory environment

  • Exposure to high volume medical testing operations

  • Real world application of simulation, statistics, and systems engineering

  • Experience presenting technical findings to operational leadership

Program Eligibility and Qualifications

To be eligible to participate, students must meet the following qualifications by the start date of the program

  • Completed Junior year in a four-year Industrial Engineering program

  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 from an accredited institution

  • Completed coursework in Simulation and Statistics

Required Documentation

  • Resume

  • Cover Letter describing interest in simulation modeling and automation

  • Official Transcripts
