Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
ITS Infrastructure & Operations (I&O) manages the ITS data centers and provides around-the-clock support for ITS business computing activities. I&O also supports and maintains the infrastructure for network, data communications transport services, and campus desktop computers, and maintains the infrastructure for the operating systems for non-research ITS servers and for disaster recovery and business continuity activities for ITS. I&O also manages the enterprise-wide IT Service Management platform ServiceNow.
Position Summary
This position is part of the Network Deployment team that is responsible for the installation, initial configuration, troubleshooting, and monitoring of a very large enterprise data network. Duties also include the planning and execution of life cycling networking assets across campus, including switching, wireless, and UPS systems. This position responds to critical network events on a 24/7/365 basis on a rotating schedule across the group. This position is on the front lines of troubleshooting network issues face to face with our customers. This position plays a critical role in the execution of networking projects through subject matter knowledge, solid project management skills, and strong attention to detail. This position is expected to work 100% on-site.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, Computer Engineering, Electronics, or related technical degree from an appropriately accredited institution; or a
- Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of networking related experience such as network design, analysis or network management; or
- Associate's degree in Electronics or Networking Technology and one year of networking related experience: or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.
- Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Demonstrated work experience in the networking field
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive work relationships in a team environment
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to new technologies on demand
  • Candidate will have excellent written and oral customer service skills

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

  • Advanced layer 1 knowledge which will include cabling and fiber installation standards, troubleshooting, experience with a fiber meter/scope, familiarity with connector types
  • Significant layer 2 knowledge including STP, LACP, LLDP, MLAG, MVRP, 802.1q
  • Basic layer 3 knowledge (including OSPF)
  • Familiarity with PoE standards including 802.3af, 802.3at, 802.3bt
  • Working experience with Extreme, Cisco, Aruba and Arista network operating systems
  • Strong understanding of TCP/IP
  • Experience with network gear life cycling (planning and execution)
  • Experience in switch configuration templating
  • Experience with data capture and analysis (Wireshark preferred)
  • Experience in Data Center networking (high speed PHY and fully meshed configurations)
  • Experience in 802.11 wireless technology
  • Experience with Extreme Campus Fabric (SPBm 802.1aq)

Required Licenses/Certifications
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Must be able to lift or move up to 60 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation, and ascend/descend ladders. Must have or be able to obtain a valid NC Driver's License, as the duties require driving a State vehicle.
