The Mathematical Sciences Department offers undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. programs in pure, applied, and computational mathematics. About the Position:


The position's teaching requirements follows the workload policy which is four (4) undergraduate courses (lower and upper level) such as Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations) each semester and provides some service duties associated with the department's undergraduate degree.

This is a state-funded, full-time (9-month) instructional (non-tenure-track) faculty position with the option of additional summer teaching opportunities. The position is renewable contingent upon satisfactory performance. The position's rank is determined at the time of hire - open rank.


Responsibilities:


Instruction/Teaching:



  • Workload policy currently identifies teaching load as four (4) undergraduate courses (lower and upper level) each semester such as Calculus, Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra, and Differential Equations.


Service:



  • Coordinates courses, mentors students, and serves on departmental committees.


Additional Assignment:


The Mason Experimental Geometry Lab (MEGL) Outreach Director will receive a reduction of two courses per semester and leads the outreach branch of the Mason Experimental Geometry Lab (https://megl.science.gmu.edu/). They engage the community through small-group activities at nearby K-12 schools and community centers, reaching approximately 1,000 students through 30 events each semester with the help of an outreach team consisting of 1-2 graduate students and 2-4 undergraduate students. The Outreach Director oversees and trains staff, schedules activities, and leads in-person activities. This additional assignment is considered to be an "at-will" position.


Required Qualifications:



  • Master's degree in Mathematics, or equivalent coursework such as a Master's degree in Education with an undergraduate degree in Mathematics;
  • Experience teaching mathematics in a university setting;
  • Clear understanding of curriculum design, pedagogy, and learning outcome alignment;
  • Exceptional communication skills; and
  • Genuine interest in nurturing the academic growth of students from diverse backgrounds.


Additional Assignment has the following required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Attributes (KSAOs):



  • Knowledge of mathematics at the university and master's level;
  • Ability to enthusiastically share mathematics with K-12 students via fun, hands-on activities; and
  • Enthusiasm for serving a diverse student body and outreach network.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Ph.D. degree in Mathematics, or expect to receive the degree by summer 2026;
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in inquiry-based learning, active learning, and/or other interactive classroom instructional models;
  • Demonstrated experience with course design and/or curriculum development;
  • Research and leadership experience at a lab in the Geometry Labs United network;
  • Experience providing organized leadership in an educational or professional setting;
  • Extensive professional experience in industry;
  • Experience in group-based teaching methods;
  • Demonstrated strong pedagogical skill set;
  • Effective intercultural competency and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion; and
  • An interest in teaching Data Science, Actuarial Sciences, or Cryptography.


Additional Assignment has the following preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Attributes (KSAOs):


  • Knowledge of research-level mathematics;
  • Understanding of age-appropriate mathematical content for K-12 students;
  • Ability to communicate advanced concepts to the general public;
  • Ability to create and share content for social media;
  • Ability to create and share training materials for the broader mathematical community;
  • Demonstrated strong administrative and organizational skills; and
  • Demonstrated ability to train assistants on administrative tasks and presentation skills.
