NAI HSC Program Assistant

The Leslie and William McMorrow Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI) at USC supports more than 1,400 youth in a college attainment and success program, (6th gr. - College graduation) and more than 150 children in early literacy (K-5th gr.) programs each year. The USC Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI), the university's signature college preparation program supports close to 900 6th -12th grade students annually. NAI is a rigorous, seven-year-college enrichment program designed to prepare students from South and East Los Angeles for admission to a college or university. This college attainment and success program supports these low-income and local neighborhood students through the college application and financial aid process and case manage through to college graduation. Under the program guidelines, students must commit to a seven-year plan of after-school tutoring, coupled with weekday morning and Saturday Academy classes. Parents are also required to attend a biweekly program called the Family Development Institute, to create a 360- degree, hands-on approach to reinforce student academic goals and study habits and maximize a healthy home environment. Students who remain in the program in good standing from sixth grade until their high school graduation are eligible for a full-financial aid-based package to USC, provided they meet admission requirements. Since its first graduating class in 1997, nearly 1,600 local students to USC campuses have completed the program with 85 percent enrollment as freshman at four-year universities, and 43 percent enrollment at USC as freshmen or transfers.

This position is for a Program Assistant that is designed to assist the NAI program at the USC Health Science campus. This position reports to the NAI HSC Program Specialist and works with program staff and teachers to coordinate the academic and programmatic activities of our weekday and Saturday Academy programming at the Health Science Campus in east Los Angeles. The position will require some travel to and from the University Park Campus and the Health Sciences Campus. This position will require working weekends and is a regular full-time position.

Preferred Schedule: 7:30AM-4:00pm, weekdays (7AM-3PM, 2 Saturdays per month)

The Program Assistant position is critical to the mission and operation of the Neighborhood Academic Initiative Program. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Implement and oversee the after-school tutoring program for middle and high school students at multiple local school sites. Work with teachers to determine curriculum, follow up with the families of students who require additional academic support.

  • Support Program Manager and staff with all operations and academic preparations for Saturday Academy program (7AM-3PM), Weekday Classes, and Recruitment at local elementary schools.

  • Track student progress and offer resources to families that will support their student's needs.

  • Assist with recruiting and onboarding tutors. Follow up weekly with operations staff to ensure all tutor hours are properly accounted for.

  • Develop and implement workshops and professional development for after school tutors and peer tutors both online and in person.

  • Assist with supervision of students during morning instruction and daily transport to home schools. Communicate with home schools when buses will arrive late.

  • Coordination of activities pertaining to the USC Saturday Academy Program at USC's Health Science Campus. Activities include preparation and procurement of materials and resources for Saturday Academy for middle and high school students to be used in Monday-Friday and Saturday components of the program.

  • Providing support to the NAI Program Specialist to oversee the HSC Saturday Academy programming.

  • Keep data current utilizing Salesforce for student participants, which includes attendance records and grades.

  • Assists in the scheduling of classes, meetings, events, and field trips. Provides leadership and guidance to Saturday Academy staff and volunteers. Ensures satisfactory follow through on assigned areas of responsibility.

  • Researches and gathers information for program purposes which may include recruitment and enrollment, data management, grade input, academic support, etc. submits recommendations and prepares reports as assigned.

  • Coordinates production and distribution of program materials including meeting agendas, reports, marketing materials, lesson plans, and program informational materials.

  • Provides client services by responding to inquiries and requests for information regarding enrollment and Saturday Academy.

  • Manages mass communication via email and mailings

  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

This is a regular full-time position.

Preferred Education and Qualifications:

Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree, experience working with low socioeconomic status families, experience working with Middle and or High School children with at-risk factors.

Preferred Experience:

  • 3 years

  • Facility with Google products, Zoom, Slack and other productivity apps.

  • Ability to write and speak fluent Spanish or Mandarin is a plus.

  • Experience working with youth and families in at-risk environments, a plus.

  • Experience working at a major university with the local community, a plus.

  • Experience working in a college access and success program, a plus.

  • Supervision of student workers and volunteers, a plus.

Preferred Expertise: Bilingual Fluent in Spanish or Mandarin; proficient oral and written.

The hourly rate range for this position is $23.03 - $27.85.
