Essential Job Responsibilities:

We're seeking a Lead Senior Data Engineer to join the Tideworks Data Platform team. This role is ideal for someone with proven experience building and operating production-grade data platforms, and who thrives on enabling teams to deliver quickly while tackling strategic technical challenges.

As a Lead Senior Data Engineer, you will design, build, and optimize data pipelines and platform components that power Tideworks' customer-facing products. You will ensure these services meet the highest standards of scalability, reliability, governance, and security, while operationalizing reusable platform capabilities that accelerate delivery across multiple solutions. By creating robust, future-ready data infrastructure, you will help customers gain faster access to high-quality data, integrate it more effectively, and unlock greater value from Tideworks' applications.

  • Architect and build scalable, reliable data pipelines and processes that transform raw operational and external data into curated datasets for analytics and BI.
  • Model data using open table formats and warehouse schemas, enforcing contracts, SLAs, quality checks, and lineage tracking.
  • Define and implement sustainable, repeatable data transformation and storage strategies with advanced analytics in mind.
  • Establish best practices for data observability, monitoring, governance, and compliance to ensure consistency, reliability, and regulatory alignment.
  • Lead technical design reviews, code reviews, and documentation to uphold engineering quality, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Identify bottlenecks, propose scalable solutions, and contribute to the technical roadmap while mentoring engineers to expand team capacity.
  • Evaluate and adopt new tools, frameworks, and methodologies that improve scalability, robustness, and productivity.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship, fostering a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and cross-team collaboration.
  • Drive delivery using Agile and DevOps practices; ensure smooth deployments, incident response, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Contribute to organizational knowledge by maintaining clear technical documentation, design records, and deployment guides.

Qualifications

Key Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Proven expertise architecting and operating large-scale ETL/ELT pipelines, with advanced proficiency in Apache Spark (PySpark) and strong programming skills in Python plus one additional language (Java or Scala).
  • Deep experience building and optimizing modern Lakehouse solutions using open table/catalog formats (Apache Iceberg, Project Nessie), Parquet, and query engines such as Presto/Trino.
  • Hands-on leadership in deploying, scaling, and securing data platforms on Amazon EKS/Kubernetes, with strong skills in CI/CD, containerization, and cloud orchestration.
  • Strong background in data modeling, integration, and governance/compliance, with the ability to evolve schemas, enforce data contracts, and maintain reliability at scale.
  • Established expertise in SQL -- designing, optimizing, and troubleshooting complex analytical queries across large, diverse datasets.
  • Ability to define and implement observability and monitoring best practices, ensuring performance, reliability, and early detection of issues across the platform.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with a track record of mentoring engineers, driving best practices, influencing stakeholders, and translating complex technical concepts into business value.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of progressive experience in data engineering, with at least 2--3 years in a lead or principal role driving technical direction and mentoring engineers.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Demonstrated success leading the design and delivery of large-scale, mission-critical data platforms in production.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud-native data platforms (AWS preferred) and orchestration at scale (Kubernetes/EKS).
  • Proven track record of establishing engineering best practices in CI/CD, observability, security, and data governance.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence roadmaps and align technical initiatives with business priorities.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Data Analytics, Kubernetes Administrator, Databricks/Snowflake) are a plus.
