An Engineering Technician will perform design and drafting services, participate in field investigations and inspections and provide construction administration functions on multi-discipline design projects of all sizes.

General responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:



  • Performing all aspects of structural modeling and/or drafting on projects, or portions of projects, as directed by a senior or lead project engineer. Projects may include single-discipline (structural-only) or multi-discipline building-type structures for both new and existing construction. Production of sketches may be required for inclusion in written reports, such as a Structural Condition Assessment Report.
  • Discussing with the lead Structural Engineer and developing resolution for all instances of conflict between a structural member/element and the work of another discipline discovered during the drafting and/or modeling process
  • Adhering to company and department standards for both CAD and REVIT projects
  • Communicating and coordinating with technicians and professionals from other disciplines during the development of models, plans, sections, and details. Results of such communication and coordination shall be shared with the lead Structural Engineer.
  • Assist with review of shop drawing submittals for general conformance with the contract drawings
  • Complying with quality control policies and procedures
  • Utilizes gained experience and knowledge to assist the design team in solving field problems during construction
  • Serves as a communication link between owner's representatives and CN design team
  • Assisting with the preparation of change order cost estimates as directed
  • Performing various duties associated with the bidding process, including managing the process and opening and tabulating bids as directed
  • Performing various duties associated with the construction phase, including field visits, monitoring the construction schedule, answering/coordinating RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and checking as-builts as directed
  • Participating in team meetings and coordinating efforts with other team members
  • Mentoring junior designers on field issues and safety

Required Skills

  • An Engineering Technician should be able to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, e-mail, accounting, and information management.
  • Working familiarity with Computer Aided Design software including AutoCAD, REVIT and/or Sketch Up.
  • Working familiarity with construction related scheduling software to a point of being able to understand the capabilities and limitations of the programs is highly desirable.
  • Ability to prepare effective and concise documents and correspondences
  • Ability to make presentations to a variety of groups
  • Have can-do attitude with a desire to provide outstanding professional services
  • Be dedicated to his/her professional development as well as the success of colleagues and the firm as a whole.

Required Experience

  • Have earned a high school diploma, or equivalent, and completed coursework in AutoCAD and/or REVIT software packages from a technical or vocational school; or
  • An Associate's Degree in a field of study related to drafting and design; or
  • A Certificate in a field of study related to drafting and design; or
  • A four-year undergraduate degree in a field of study related to drafting and design, Civil Engineering or Architecture
  • Applicable Autodesk certifications are desirable
  • An Engineering Technician should be able to effectively utilize current company software programs for word processing, e-mail, accounting, and information management.
  • Working familiarity with Computer Aided Design software including AutoCAD, REVIT and/or Sketch Up.
  • Working familiarity with construction related scheduling software to a point of being able to understand the capabilities and limitations of the programs is highly desirable.
  • 10 years progressive experience in a variety of construction types and contract types
  • Experience in heavy construction, such as piles and foundations, concrete forming and placing or civil site work.
  • Comprehensive knowledge an interpretation of standard construction documents
  • Detail oriented and familiar with the typical documentation requirements of construction projects
  • Experience with the Virginia General Conditions and the FAR.
  • Have some design experience as a CAD and BIM technician with demonstrable proficiency in the use of AutoCAD or REVIT software packages.


Working Conditions

At JMT, we prioritize a healthy work/life balance and offer a flexible hybrid working schedule. JMT offers a hybrid work schedule. The selected candidate is expected to work in a JMT office location at least three days per week or as needed to perform assigned duties. While most of our work is desk-based, there may be times when standing, walking, bending and lifting of minimal weight are required. Our office environment is comfortable, has adequate lighting and temperature, and is free from noise, dust, and other hazards.
