Corewell Health's Inpatient Phlebotomy Services at William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak is a high-volume, fast-paced, hospital-based laboratory, performing up to five hundred blood draws daily. Our work is essential to patient care-from early diagnosis through treatment and recovery.

The Supervisor of Lab Support Services, in collaboration with the Manager, will primarily oversee administrative operations, with occasional involvement in direct patient care. Experienced Lead Technicians support each shift.

Our ideal candidate is an experienced phlebotomist and analytical thinker, capable of assessing workflow, setting priorities, and guiding the team to maintain optimal performance.

The anticipated start date for this position will be January 2026.

Scope of work

Under the direction of the Phlebotomy Manager, responsible for the daily coordination of the phlebotomy laboratory staff and operations.

Essential Functions

  • Manages direct report staff to include scheduling, interviewing, evaluating job performance, performance evaluations, competencies, continuing education, maintaining employee files, time keeping and attendance, corrective action, participating with Manager in staff meetings.
  • In conjunction with the Phlebotomy Manager, responsible for the implementation and maintenance of all policies and procedures required by hospital, laboratory, and any governing regulatory agencies to assure the ongoing safe and efficient daily operation of phlebotomy services. Supports and monitors customer, and employee service expectations.
  • Collects and provides all department quality data indicators to the Laboratory Quality Assurance department or other entities required.
  • Manages expected workflow in all areas; maintains and monitors phlebotomy collection and expectations to include safety, accuracy, and response/result times. This includes special projects, process improvement and training.
  • Troubleshoots and problems solve laboratory orders and requirements. Investigates errors and establishes and enforce Corrective Action protocols.
  • Initiates, maintains, and supports employee engagement strategies.
  • Assists with blood drawings when needed.
  • All other duties as assigned by Manager, Director, or other Executive Leader(s).

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent relevant work experience Required.
  • Associate's degree or Bachelor's degree strongly Preferred.
  • Minimum of three (3) years phlebotomy experience with various blood collection techniques Required.
  • Knowledge of Specimen Collection Required.

Effective January 1, 2026, following the execution of a new agreement between Corewell Health and Quest Diagnostics, this position will transition employment to Quest Diagnostics. While this role will be integral to Corewell Health laboratory operations, employment will be with Quest Diagnostics effective January 1, 2026, contingent upon successful completion of Quest Diagnostics' pre-employment requirements.
