What to Expect
This role will be based out of the Greater Houston Area (TX) however will be expected to work in Lathrop (CA) to support early builds and validation for the first 6-12 months. Other travel may be required. In this role, the welder will join, fabricate, and repair metal and other weldable materials by applying appropriate techniques and using various welding devices. The ideal candidate will bring technical know-how and an innovative mindset to drive industry-leading solutions.
What You'll Do
- Read, interpret, and follow basic blueprints, diagrams, engineering drawings, weld symbols, bills of materials, and written instructions to accurately create equipment and products
- Design and build basic and/or complex structures, supports, or frameworks during daily tasks. Ability to create weldment setups and fixturing, basic understanding of BIW fixtures, locating pins, clamps, and troubleshooting part misalignment/clamp sequencing
- Weld using GMAW, MIG process to perform oxy/acetylene torch, plasma arc cutting processes. Demonstrate knowledge of weld symbols, joint types (butt, fillet, lap), and hands-on experience with single-sided/double-sided welding techniques. Maintain inventory of manufacturing products and welding consumables
- Apply welding process knowledge, including wire feed speed, voltage, gas flow rate, familiarity with spatter control, arc stability, burn-through prevention, and weld sequencing to reduce distortion
- Set up and fine-tune weld parameters based on material & thickness, and use of weld schedules/parameter sheets. Utilize handheld tools such as a handheld screw gun, drill gun, and grinders to operate calipers, weld gauges, tape measures, and other welding hand tools
- Familiarity with Fanuc, KUKA, or ABB welding robots, ability to teach points or adjust torch angles & offsets, and understand robot cell safety and I/O diagnostics
- Perform weld quality inspections via visual checks (porosity, undercut, overlap), use of weld gauges & calipers and familiarity with destructive (peel, macro etch) and non-destructive testing (ultrasound, X-ray) methods. Understanding of and ability to perform all work in accordance with quality standards (AWS D1.1, ISO 3834, OEM-specific specs) and established safety procedures
What You'll Bring
- 1-3 years MIG welding experience
- 1-3 years' experience operating in a similar capacity within a manufacturing or relatable facility
- Ability to perform work accurately and thoroughly
- Ability to find issues in a work process and receive safety signals using sight, touch and hearing
- Work in a team environment and respect all teammates physical demands and abilities
- Specific technical or vocational training or certification preferred
- Must have a strong command of the English language, both written and verbal
Essential Physical Demands
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods of time, up to 12 hours a day
- Ability to stand and walk for up to 12 hours/day, including over varied and uneven terrain
- Frequently and repetitively, lift, push and carry up to 35 lbs., including the ability to carry 20 lbs. up and down stairs
- Frequently and repetitively, bend, lift and reach to install parts
- Stoop, lay, bend, reach, squat, kneel, crouch, twist and crawl for extended periods of time, including up to 12 hours/day
- Climb and maintain balance on ladders, scaffolding or other high structures
- Ability to find issues in a work process and receive safety signals using sight, touch, and hearing
- Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to: safety glasses, safety shoes, bump caps, arm protection, and adhering to prescribed safety rules and guidelines
