HJF is seeking a Bioinformatics Programmer Analyst II to recommend enhancements or changes to the system configuration to maintain optimum system performance and utility. Arranges project requirements in programming sequence by analyzing requirements; prepares a work flow chart and diagram using knowledge of computer capabilities, subject matter, programming language, and logic. Develops custom scripts and applications, test applications, create software patches, and perform routine maintenance. Creates detailed test cases and document all programming and systems changes to include flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments, and revision dates. This is the second of three level Programmer Analyst series. Career-Development position that requires moderate skill and developing proficiency conducting tasks and assignments as directed. Contributes to team objectives and outcomes as guided with moderate supervision that allows some latitude for independent judgment. Limited problem-solving responsibility while working under defined guidelines.

This position will be in support of the Multidrug Resistant Organism Repository & Surveillance Network (MRSN). The Bioinformatics Programmer Analyst II is part of the MRSN Team within the Diagnostics and Countermeasures Branch (DCB), within the Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR), located at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). The candidate will employ a variety of bioinformatic and IT database tools and software to analyze bacterial genomes and their associated metadata for the purpose of outbreak investigations and local, national, and international bacterial epidemiology.

  • The candidate will employ a variety of bioinformatic and IT database tools and software to analyze bacterial genomes and their associated metadata for the purpose of outbreak investigations and local, national, and international bacterial epidemiology.
  • The candidate will collarborate extensively with internal and external researchers on the molecular genetics of antibiotic resistant bacteria. In particular, the candidate will analyze and research the global dissemination of antibiotic resistant bacteria and participate in real-time surveillance for these organisms throughout the military healthcare system.
  • The participant in this opportunity will gain extensive experience that will greatly enhance his/her career. In particular, the participant will gain hands-on knowledge of working with both short-read and long-read DNA sequences using the Illumina Miseq and Nextseq systems and the Oxford Nanopore MinIon platform.
  • Performs and conduct analyses using the most state-of-the-art software and bioinformatics tools, and will also develop hands-on programming experience using Linux, Python, R.
  • The candidate will gain extensive hands-on experience working with various databases and computer networks to ensure the availability of high accuracy data analytics for outbreak investigations.
  • Under the mentorship of WRAIR staff, the candidate will help establish fundamental understanding of translational, military-relevant scientific research.
  • The candidate will be highly encouraged to begin expanding their network of scientific colleagues and seek collaborations within the U.S. Department of Defense, academia, and commercial companies.
  • The candidate will be challenged to develop new and innovative methods for analyzing bacterial genomes and will have the opportunity to make significant contributions to this emerging field while conducting research in one of the most comprehensive sequencing laboratories in the USA.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.


Education and Experience



  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required.


Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities



  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to work with a wide variety of program management personnel as well as IT personnel of varied technical knowledge. The incumbent must have the skills to work in a dynamic environment where priorities change rapidly.
  • Capable of working both independently and as a team player.
  • Analytical capability of data from major proteogenomic experimental platforms including NextGen sequencing and mass-spectrometry proteomics, and array-based data.
  • Capable of using data analysis application software such as R and SAS. Familiar with a relational database such as Oracle or MySQL.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and capable of writing abstracts, manuscripts, and reports.
  • Understanding of clinico-pathologic data is a plus.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.


Physical Capabilities



  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.


Work Environment



  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.


Compensation



  • The annual salary range for this position is $64,200-$83,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
