Position Title Early Administrative Archives Project Archivist

Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Gottesman Research Library seeks a full-time Project Archivist to process the Museum's early administrative correspondence for one year. The Project Archivist will lead the reappraisal, description and arrangement efforts of these records in close collaboration with Archives and other Museum staff. The Project Archivist will apply established protocols to identify and sequester restricted materials, reintegrate associated/separated collections across departments/collections and create new finding aid data leveraging legacy description. The Project Archivist will also participate in outreach related to the ongoing efforts of the project.
The expected salary range for the Early Administrative Archives Project Archivist is $65,000/annual - $70,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications


  • ALA-accredited master's degree in library and information science or equivalent, with formal training in archival theory and practice.
  • Three years of professional archival processing experience.
  • Demonstrated proficiency working in archival content management systems, such as ArchivesSpace, with knowledge of archival description standards, such as DACS, EAD, EAC.
  • Demonstrated success in arranging, describing and processing large archival collections, writing complex finding aids while leveraging legacy arrangement and description.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate and implement complex projects; including talent for developing successful project and processing plans, setting goals, establishing timelines and reporting on milestones and outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional archival experience in a museum or academic setting or with institutional archives.
  • Familiarity with basic preservation of archival materials, including proper handling, housing and storage.
  • Experience managing staff, interns or volunteers in an archive setting.
  • Strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills including accuracy and strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with rights management and appraising restricted materials.
  • Experience with or interest in digitization projects.
  • Certified Archivist certificate.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.

    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. May include any of the following:

      • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
