AP105 Senior Cloud DevOps Engineer
Roman Space Telescope - NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

ADNET Systems is seeking a Cloud DevOps Engineer with expertise in AWS cloud-native environments, modern DevOps practices, and large-scale scientific data systems to support NASA's Roman Space Telescope. This role is ideal for an engineer experienced in building and modernizing distributed applications, automating deployment pipelines, and enabling researchers to perform large-scale data analysis in a secure, cost-efficient cloud environment.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, implement, and maintain AWS-based HPC and data platforms supporting Roman's science simulations (weak-lensing, microlensing, coronagraph modeling) and multi-petabyte data pipelines.
  • Build and manage containerized workloads (Docker, Kubernetes, AWS ECS/EKS, ParallelCluster) to enable reproducible scientific workflows and efficient scaling of compute-intensive simulations.
  • Develop, standardize, and optimize CI/CD pipelines (GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions, Jenkins) to streamline deployment, and support rapid iteration on mission-critical software.
  • Support observability and reliability by deploying logging, monitoring, and alerting solutions (Grafana, CloudWatch, custom dashboards) across HPC and microservice workloads.
  • Collaborate with scientists to containerize legacy applications and migrate them to AWS environments.
  • Manage data lifecycle across Amazon S3, and DynamoDB/PostgreSQL layers.
  • Automate environment provisioning and configuration using Infrastructure-as-Code best practices.
  • Drive efforts in technical debt reduction, dependency upgrades, and architectural refactoring to modernize mission software while ensuring long-term maintainability.
  • Mentor team members, contribute to hiring processes, and foster an agile DevOps culture that supports scientific discovery.

Required Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in Cloud/DevOps engineering roles, including production experience with AWS services (EC2, ECS/EKS, S3, DynamoDB, RDS/PostgreSQL).
  • Strong background in CI/CD development and administration (GitLab CI/CD, GitHub Actions, Jenkins), including designing reusable pipeline templates.
  • 10+ years proficiency in modern programming and scripting languages (Python, Java, TypeScript/JavaScript, Bash) across backend, frontend, and infrastructure contexts.
  • Demonstrated success modernizing legacy applications via containerization and DevOps workflows.
  • Experience implementing observability solutions (Grafana) for large-scale or distributed applications.
  • Experience with Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform, OpenTofu) and automated environment provisioning.
  • Solid understanding of Linux systems administration, security best practices, and AWS networking.
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (LPR) required, with US residency for the past 3 consecutive years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 Investigation through NASA.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience supporting scientific or research workloads (HPC, data-intensive pipelines, or mission-critical systems).
  • Familiarity with FITS/HDF5 data formats or astronomical data standards.
  • Experience collaborating with NASA, DOE, or other federal science/engineering organizations.
