WGL - Corrosion Control Technician II

Union: Yes

Rate Classification: Grade 7 - $39.92 per hour, per the Collective Bargaining Agreement

Position Summary:

The Corrosion Control Technician II is responsible for conducting various remedial surveys to comply with DOT 192 Subpart I requirements for corrosion control. This role involves using independent judgment to troubleshoot and propose remedial actions to restore cathodic protection levels to company pipeline facilities. Key responsibilities include cathodic protection work at Washington Gas Plants, Gates, and Hampshire Gas System, stray current evaluation and mitigation, rectifier monitoring, troubleshooting, and repair, and providing locating services. Additional duties include performing activities related to drip surveys, water outages, gas emergency response, and construction activities related to corrosion control. The Technician will also train, mentor, and oversee lower-grade employees and operate company vehicles.

This position is progressive, leading to the Senior Corrosion Control Technician - Grade 8.

Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Perform all activities required of lower-grade Corrosion Control employees.

  • Conduct stray current (AC and DC) analysis and mitigation.

  • Use independent judgment to resolve technical field issues.

  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and repair/replace impressed current rectifier systems.

  • Mentor, train, and provide technical oversight to lower-grade employees.

  • Conduct Pipeline Integrity functions as needed and make recommendations based on findings.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned, including related business support and administrative activities (e.g., backend meter processing, backend corrosion processing, backend leak/damage prevention processing, peer safety observations, vehicle clean-out, cross-functional training activities, etc.).

Qualifications, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Education:High School diploma or equivalent G.E.D.

  • Experience:Three (3) years of experience as a Corrosion Control Technician I.

  • Skills:Basic computer skills required.

  • Certifications:Must successfully pass the Corrosion Control Technician II Qualification School, all required Operation Qualification exams, review schools, and field clearances. Must attend and pass exams for the "Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Level Courses at the AUCSC" (Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course) or equivalent. Successfully pass a formal, lab-based Rectifier Training and Maintenance school, such as one provided by J.A. Electronics, or equivalent. Must have completed and passed ACT WorkKeys exam.

  • Licenses/Certifications:Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record.

  • Shift Work:As required.

  • Use of Personal Vehicle:As required.

  • Additional Requirement:CDL holders are subject to testing under Federal Highway Regulations.
