We seek a Teaching Faculty for the Biology Core Curriculum Program (Biocore), an undergraduate honors biology program. Learn more at https://biocore.wisc.edu.

The position is a 12-month, renewable (non-tenure-track) teaching appointment within the Departments of Integrative Biology and Botany in the College of Letters & Science. Faculty from across the University teach within Biocore courses helping ensure biology honors is available to all undergraduate degree programs at UW-Madison. The Teaching Faculty will apply their highest level of expertise in biological science, research, and pedagogy to student learning through a multi-semester laboratory curriculum along with an introductory course for first-year students that emphasizes the process of science, research, group collaboration, and science communication (written and oral). The Teaching Faculty will lead instructional activities including classroom instruction, curriculum development, hiring, training and supervision of graduate teaching assistants, and curriculum assessment in alignment with Biocore program learning outcomes. There may be opportunities for Discipline-Based Educational Research (DBER) and Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) work. The Teaching Faculty will instruct within Biocore courses and have opportunities to contribute to program assessment, student recruitment, community outreach, and other Biocore related extracurricular activities.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • Provide mentorship or advising for undergraduate leadership in teaching (classroom mentors), community outreach, research and/or independent study.

  • Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • May make presentations to faculty and to staff members on instructional programs and techniques
  • Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and may train other staff in use of these techniques
  • Assists in development of grant proposals for funding of model instruction programs
  • Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • Works with faculty to identify and develop new methods of advancing instruction in the discipline

Compensation:

The typical starting salary for this position is $63,000 - $75,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Employees in this position can expect to receive benefits such as generous vacation, holidays and paid time off; competitive insurance and saving accounts; and retirement benefits.

Required Qualifications:

  • Candidate must be a broadly trained biologist and able to lead and teach large (100+ students), multi-section, introductory to intermediate level undergraduate laboratory courses

  • Familiarity with standard laboratory equipment

  • Familiarity with statistical data analysis

  • Ability to work effectively and compassionately with an undergraduate student population to support student learning, foster student community development, resolve conflict and provide student mentoring


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in one or more of the following areas: ecology, genetics, evolution, cell and molecular biology

  • Scholarship in teaching and learning or education research, undergraduate research mentoring, community outreach, program assessment


Education:

PhD required; focus in biology or closely related field
