Job Description

The Technology Transfer Office (TTO) facilitates and oversees technology transfer to government and industry, fosters collaborative research with the private sector, and manages the Laboratory's Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio. To support the growing complexity of financial, compliance, and operational activities across this space, the Laboratory is seeking a candidate to work under the mentorship and guidance of senior members of the TTO. This position will join the TTO to enable and enhance financial workflows related to the Laboratory's licensing, collaboration, and IP management activities.

Essential Functions

  • Monitor and manage financial flows related to technology licenses, royalty payments, patent expenses, invoices, cost recovery, revenue distribution, and joint institutional agreements
  • Track and analyze financial performance metrics and revenue distributions related to IP assets
  • Support the budgeting, forecasting, and cost recovery efforts for TTO programs and initiatives
  • Ensure compliance with federal regulations and institutional policies governing technology transfer, including Bayh-Dole obligations, cost principles, and sponsor-specific requirements
  • Contribute to contract and agreement development with attention to terms impacting cost recovery, reporting, and financial obligations
  • Manage and refine operational processes for revenue collection, disbursement, and audit readiness
  • Collaborate with legal, contracts, and finance personnel across the Laboratory and broader MIT ecosystem to align practices and resolve complex operational challenges
  • Support preparation of reports and dashboards for internal stakeholders and external sponsors
  • Serve as a resource for TTO staff and Laboratory technical teams on financial best practices in technology transfer operations

Requirements

  • Bachelors, Masters, or equivalent degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Finance, Public Policy, or related field. In lieu of degree, professional experience will be considered.
  • Strong quantitative skills and experience with financial modeling, tracking, and reporting tools
  • Familiarity with federal R&D funding structures and regulatory frameworks (e.g., FAR, Bayh-Dole Act)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively engage with various stakeholders, including research staff, administrative staff legal professionals, and industry representatives
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a highly collaborative and interdisciplinary environment
  • Effectively address complex business, legal, interpersonal, and inter-organizational issues; work independently; and exercise good judgment and discretion in the performance of all work assignments
  • Strong organizational skills, meticulous attention to detail, a collaborative approach to developing and maintaining effective working relationships
  • High degree of initiative, ownership, and attention to operational detail
  • Prior experience in government technology transfer is strongly preferred
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance



The following skills or attributes are highly desired:



  • Minimum of 10 years with Masters or 12 years with Bachelors of professional experience in financial operations, research administration, or business strategy roles involving contracts or sponsored research.
  • Experience in a federal laboratory, university, or research institution setting supporting research administration or technology transfer
  • Proficiency in Wellspring Sophia or equivalent technology transfer software
  • Familiarity with intellectual property and licensing concepts, especially in the context of government-funded research
  • 5+ years of professional experience in financial operations, research administration, or business strategy roles involving contracts or sponsored research
