Position description

POSITION DESCRIPTION - SPECIALIST SERIES (APM 330, UCD 330)

Assistant Specialist - Associate Department of Biomedical Engineering, Medical Imaging

NATURE AND PURPOSE

The candidate will support one of our research projects that involves radiation dosimetry modeling using Monte Carlo simulation, Python code developed by our laboratory. The candidate will assist with developing these new tools and applying them translational imaging studies conducted at UCD Health. These projects include lutetium-177 therapies and yttrium-90 therapies for cancer.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DESIGNATED AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Under the direction of the PI, the candidate will work developing and adapting the computational pipeline to incorporate the available patient data. Some developments will use python and will involve manipulating medical images in DICOM format. Code maintenance, optimization, and versioning will also be included in the candidate's duties.

The candidate will collaborate with the research group to generate data for manuscript preparation, review, and submission. The candidate's significant and meaningful contributions described above may lead to authorship or acknowledgement on published work.

I. RESEARCH IN SPECIALIZED AREAS (95 % EFFORT)

* The candidate will be responsible for improving our custom code. These responsibilities will be overseen by the PI and a postdoctoral researcher.

* The candidate will assist the PI and other collaborators in writing and reviewing manuscripts relevant to the project, especially in the area of nuclear medicine and radiation dosimetry.

* In addition to successfully collaborating with other research personnel in the lab and communicating scientific information, the candidate will be responsible for presenting research results during weekly lab meetings.

* The candidate will need to be able to interact and work closely with other biomedical engineers, physicists, and will have the opportunity to interact with clinicians

II. PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE AND ACTIVITY (5% EFFORT)

The candidate will participate in appropriate professional/technical societies or groups and other educational and research organizations.

* The candidate will have the potential to attend various scholarly conferences, including the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Annual Meeting and the American Association of Medical Physicists Annual Meeting. The candidate will collaborate with researchers in the lab, the UC Davis Medical Physics group, and will help to produce data presented at conferences and in manuscripts.


Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Applicants must have a master's degree, or a bachelor's degree plus three or more years of related research experience in computer science, electrical and computer engineering, or related discipline, or be enrolled in a master's degree program.

Preferred qualifications (other preferred, but not required, qualifications for the position)

Knowledge of nuclear imaging and Monte Carlo simulation
