Job Summary
The Social Media Specialist serves as a strategist and content creator across all social media platforms, with a particular focus on connecting with prospective students and authentically promoting the University's brand. This role is responsible for managing the University's social media presence. This is done by collaborating with departments across campus to ensure a consistent and effective digital presence, developing and implementing content strategies, and monitoring engagement and analytics. The Social Media Specialist serves as a liaison to the University's Office of Admission and is responsible for generating, posting and reporting on social media initiatives.
Salary Range $23-$25.50/hour. This is the expected hourly range for this position. The actual hourly wage offered will depend on a candidate's experience and education, and departmental budget.
Essential Functions

  • Manages the University's official social media channels, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, X, TikTok, Snapchat, LinkedIn, and YouTube.
  • Writes and produces multimedia content (copy, images, video) tailored for each platform and audience, with a focus on prospective student engagement.
  • Creates and maintains a social media content calendar aligned with key recruitment, retention, advancement, and other institutional priorities.
  • Maintains the Admission social media calendar under the direction of the Director of Admission Marketing.
  • Monitors and responds to social media conversations, including questions, comments, and direct messages, maintaining a responsive and engaging online presence.
  • Supports institutional crisis communication by monitoring social media mentions and providing timely insights to leadership and responses, as appropriate.
  • Manages the office's photo and video libraries.
  • Supervises a team of student employees who support University social media accounts.
  • Analyzes social media performance data, generates reports and dashboards to assess campaign effectiveness, and makes data-informed recommendations.
  • Serves as a consultant across the University on best practices, brand alignment, and digital content strategy.
  • Drives social strategies that support enrollment goals, student retention, community-building, and alumni engagement.
  • Attends and provides live digital coverage of University events, sometimes requiring evening and weekend availability.
  • Evaluates emerging platforms, trends, and tools to recommend adoption and ensure innovative content delivery.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, marketing, journalism, digital media, or a related field.
  • Minimum of three years of professional experience in digital marketing, editorial, or social media roles.
  • Demonstrated expertise in managing and growing engagement across multiple social media platforms.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and storytelling skills with strong attention to voice, tone, and audience.
  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills with the ability to work across departments and levels.
  • Availability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends, for event coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency in video editing software (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite).
  • Deep understanding of social media platform trends, algorithms, and audience behavior.
  • Experience using social media management and analytics tools (e.g., Sprout Social, Meta Business Suite, Google Analytics).

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements
The essential functions of this position are primarily performed in an indoor setting, but require some exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Work is often sedentary in nature and requires remaining in a stationary position for extended periods. Required abilities include speaking and hearing for in-person and virtual communication, using close and distance vision when reading documents or viewing screens, and performing tasks with repetitive fine motor skills. Work may require occasional lifting, bending, carrying, or otherwise moving objects weighing up to 15 pounds.
