Health insurance benefit plans eligibility begins on the first of the month following date of hire. Full time employees are also eligible for the tuition waiver program which covers the cost of tuition and fees for up to three (3) undergraduate or graduate courses per academic year at

Brief Summary of Work for this Position |
The Academic Advisor in the Honors College supports student success by providing comprehensive academic advising to Honors students from all majors. This role involves guiding students through curriculum requirements, academic planning, and professional development. The advisor collaborates closely with faculty, staff, and student services to ensure students are well-supported throughout their academic journey. The ideal candidate will be student-centered, detail-oriented, and knowledgeable about Honors culture and programs. In addition to managing a caseload, the Academic Advisor will also serve on taskforces, work with other university departments, and support Honors College programmatic needs.
This position relies heavily on effective communication via in-person, phone, video conference and email; therefore, the Academic Advisor needs to be an excellent communicator, self-starter, quick learner, and able to work in a collaborative environment. This position will report to an Academic Advising Coordinator or the Director of Academic Advising. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
- A Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Affairs, or a closely related field with three years of progressive experience in academic advising, student support services, or a comparable area; or a Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Student Affairs, or a closely related discipline.
- Experience utilizing a range of software applications and educational technologies, including Microsoft Office Suite, learning management systems, and other technology-enhanced delivery platforms.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience |
- Experience advising Honors students through curricular issues, programming, thesis support, co-curricular programming and experiences.
- Preference for work experience related to administering services and programs related to supporting varied student populations, program assessment and evaluation, and retention initiatives.
- Possess a proven track record for effective advising, coaching, and communication skills within a diverse student population as part of a team.
- Knowledgeable of best practices and theoretical foundations in the fields of student development, counseling, supplemental instruction, advising, and student services.
- Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws, university regulations, and programs/policies required for compliance.
- Experience with and commitment to working with students from diverse backgrounds (e.g. first-year, continuing, and transfer students; pre-professional students; adult learners, military students, on-campus and on-line students) and knowledge of issues of these student populations.
- Experience offering a high-level of customer service in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with guiding students through undergraduate research programs, such as Honors thesis projects, including advising on project viability, securing faculty supervisors, connecting students to research resources, and providing mentorship from project start to graduation.

UNCW Honors College offers student-centered seminars to high ability undergraduates. Honors courses are characterized by student-lead discussions, creative research projects, deep readings, and applied knowledge.
