Job Description:
The Van Driver is responsible for transporting students safely and efficiently to and from school, field trips, and related activities using either a non-CDL school bus or a VDPE-approved student passenger van. The driver ensures the vehicle is maintained in safe operating condition, performs regular inspections, and upholds the safety and well-being of all passengers during loading, unloading, and transit. This position requires professionalism, reliability, and attentiveness to both student needs and transportation regulations. This position is a Full-time, 10-month position, that reports to the Transportation Support Supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent
- Language: Ability to speak and understand English; Bilingual is preferred.
- Experience: Job-related experience preferred.
- Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

- Student Safety and Supervision: Ability to maintain a secure environment during transport, monitoring behavior and ensuring compliance with safety protocols.
- Vehicle Operation and Inspection: Skill in conducting pre-trip and post-trip inspections, identifying hazards, and ensuring safe operation of vehicles.
- Emergency Preparedness: Ability to respond appropriately to accidents, medical emergencies, or hazardous road conditions; knowledge of evacuation procedures.
- Support for Students with Special Needs: Ability to assist students with diverse physical, medical, and behavioral needs, including lifting, repositioning, and using specialized equipment
- Communication: Effectively communicates with students, parents, families, drivers, school staff, and transportation staff regarding schedules, behavior, and student needs.
- Adaptability: Ability to respond calmly to emergencies, special needs, and unexpected situations while maintaining student safety and order.
- Teamwork: Works collaboratively with drivers, transportation staff, and school personnel to support student transportation needs.
Core Responsibilities:
- Transport students over assigned routes, field trips, and related activities in a safe and timely manner.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, including safety, mechanical, and cleanliness checks.
- Assist students during boarding and unloading, including lifting or securing equipment (wheelchairs, car seats, restraints, etc.) as needed.
- Ensure kindergarten and specified students are released only to authorized individuals per manifest requirements.
- Monitor student behavior on the bus/van, reinforcing safety and behavioral expectations.
- Conduct emergency evacuation drills as required by regulation.
- Report incidents, accidents, misconduct, or safety concerns promptly to appropriate staff.
- Respond to emergencies such as accidents, road hazards, or medical incidents, following established procedures.
- Maintain accurate records and reports, including attendance, incident reports, mileage logs, and inspection documentation.
- Clean and sanitize vehicle interiors, and assist with snow removal to maintain operational readiness.
- Attend required meetings, trainings, and safety sessions to maintain compliance and skill proficiency.
- Complete requiring training and assessments to obtain school bus endorsement, as applicable
- Support the overall transportation operation to ensure effective, safe, and equitable student transit, including students with special needs.
Salary/Pay Information: Hourly wage $21.66 to $26.62 an hour (Additional factors in calculation, including hours, # of days, etc.) Clearances:
- Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
- Tuberculosis Skin Test.

- Must follow safety and health protocols.
