Department Computer Science Engineering
About the Department
Founded in 1967, the NC State University Department of Computer Science is one of the oldest and most respected in the nation. With over 1,900 students, the department continues to grow to meet the demands of our transforming industry. It is among the top schools in the nation in the number of awarded bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in computer science. The department combines top-tier teaching with hands-on research and industry experience, preparing the next generation of computer scientists for success.
A key strength of the program is its location on NC State's Centennial Campus, where academia and industry work side-by-side to develop the latest technologies, products and services. Just down the road from Centennial is the Research Triangle Park; this hub for innovation and collaboration boasts hundreds of top technology companies, research organizations and startups. These close connections offer unparalleled career opportunities, from internship and co-op programs for those just starting out, to research and leadership positions at every level of the job market.
But the Department of Computer Science doesn't just measure success in terms of graduates. With more than 70 tenured, tenure-track and teaching faculty, the department serves as a welcoming, growing space for all in academia.
While this program certainly has a storied past, all eyes look to what's next. 'Engineering North Carolina's Future', the state's plan to enroll an additional 4,000 students in the College of Engineering, is already underway. This investment from university, local and state partners sets the department up for continued success for decades to come.
This is what it means to Think and Do.
