The Opportunity

Broker Tech builds products for the Convoy Platform at DAT, enabling brokers to match and execute shipments while they work seamlessly within their Transportation Management Systems. We partner with brokers to transform how they work, grow, and succeed by:

  • Empowering Matching: Building smarter tools and visibility that boost broker match rates and strengthen carrier connections.
  • Fueling Growth: Enabling brokers to expand through better pricing, new freight categories, and integrations.
  • Encouraging Healthy Behaviors: Guiding brokers toward practices that protect our carrier network and ensure product quality.
  • Ensuring Payments: Strengthening and automating broker payment processes to reduce risk and ensure reliability.
  • Enhancing Communication: Creating unified, timely communication channels so brokers stay informed and engaged in real time.
  • Enabling Ideal Experiences: Delivering seamless workflows leveraging APIs and webhooks between Convoy Platform and TMSs, while empowering brokers with self-service configuration and onboarding tools.

We're a smart, collaborative, and supportive group that values both technical excellence and team culture. We move quickly but thoughtfully, and we're looking for a strong technical leader to guide us into the next phase of scaling the Convoy Platform.

Candidate profile

As a Principal Engineer on Broker Tech, you'll be one of possibly two senior technical leaders guiding the org. This role is both hands-on and strategic: you'll write high-quality code, set engineering standards, and shape the long-term technical direction of our platform. You'll also work cross-org to elevate the Convoy Platform as a whole, influencing system architecture, integration strategy, and how we scale to meet evolving broker and platform needs.

This is a high-impact role for someone who thrives at the intersection of technical vision, cross-team collaboration, and mentorship.

What You'll Do

  • Lead technical direction for Broker Tech, ensuring scalability, reliability, and seamless broker experiences.
  • Drive cross-org collaboration with other engineering teams, shaping platform-wide standards and architecture.
  • Introduce and champion best practices in design, coding, testing, observability, and performance.
  • Mentor and elevate the team of 9 engineers, leading by example and fostering technical growth.
  • Guide product evolution across a broad scope: payments, onboarding, admin roles, matched carrier data, integrations, broker communications, and beyond.
  • Balance hands-on coding and architecture, ensuring alignment between tactical execution and strategic vision.
  • Partner with product and design to deliver thoughtful, user-centric solutions that scale with our customers' businesses.

The Skills and Experience You'll Bring

  • 10+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a proven track record of delivering simple, scalable solutions to complex problems.
  • Deep experience with system design, distributed systems, and integrations.
  • Experience designing and evolving public APIs with multiple customers.
  • Strong technical judgment, able to balance short-term tradeoffs with long-term platform health.
  • Experience guiding technical strategy at an org or platform level.
  • A collaborative leader who builds trust, communicates clearly, and lifts others up.
  • Passion for building products that power real-world businesses and remove friction for users.

Why Join Us

  • Impact: You'll shape not just Broker Tech, but the Convoy Platform at large - a critical part of DAT's future.
  • Culture: Join a team that's sharp, humble, and kind. We solve hard problems together, with humor and empathy.
  • Growth: As one of two Principal Engineers in the org, you'll play a defining role in setting technical direction and mentoring the next generation of engineers.
