The role is part of the In-Space Systems business unit, which is focused on addressing two of the most compelling challenges in spaceflight today: space infrastructure and increasing mobility on-orbit.

In this role, you will be part of the Blue Ring Structures & Mechanisms Integrated Product Team. Your skill in the design and analysis of spacecraft structures, as well as your ability to deliver safe, reliable, ready to install hardware that meets requirements, while doing so within the allocated cost and schedule requirements, will lead to a rewarding career with Blue Origin. Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
  • Perform Finite element analysis, as well as strength checks using classical hand calculations of orbital vehicle structure and mechanisms hardware
  • Collaborate with design engineers to optimize structural designs for weight, strength, and manufacturability
  • Document structural analysis to support the release of engineering drawings/documents
  • Provide technical guidance on design concepts (risk vs. cost vs. performance)
  • Maintain and report on activity schedule, budget, and technical status
  • Support other teams and team members with inputs for configuration development and trade studies
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering and 3+ years vehicle structures or mechanisms analysis experience
  • Familiarity with classical strength analysis methods (Bruhn, Niu, Roark, Shigley etc.)
  • Ability to understand and build free-body diagrams for internal and reaction load derivation
  • Experience with one or more finite element modeling (FEM) packages (ABAQUS strongly desired, or HyperWorks) required
  • Understanding of FEM modeling techniques (boundary conditions, bolted connections, contact, verification methods, elastic, and elastoplastic analysis, etc.)
Preferred:
  • M.S. degree with experience in spacecraft and/or launch vehicle structural analysis
  • Solid understanding of fatigue/fracture (NDE methods, fail-safe vs. safe life, NASA-STD-5019)
  • Experience with nonlinear finite element analysis and thermo-mechanical analysis
  • Bolted joint hand calculations (bolt preload, joint stiffness, shear-tension interaction, insert pull-out, NASA-STD-5020 etc.)
  • Experience in writing detailed design and analysis reports
  • Experience with analyzing/dispositioning non-conformances

Compensation Range for:

CA applicants is $96,310.00-$134,833.65;CO applicants is $88,284.00-$123,597.60;WA applicants is $96,310.00-$134,833.65

  • Required for certain Job Profiles: Ability to obtain and maintain Merchant Mariner Credential, which includes pre-employment and random drug testing as well as DOT physical
