That's why we're looking for a Business Development Manager to develop and implement business development and marketing strategies and tactics for the Practice Groups in accordance with firm policies and procedures. Additionally, this individual will bring leadership and best practices to the business development department.

This role can sit in our New York or Washington, DC office

The ideal candidate will be responsible for...



  • Partnering with practice leaders to set and execute business development goals aligned with firm strategy; providing coaching on business development best practices and leading regular progress meetings
  • Managing full RFP process, including evaluation, drafting, coordination, and submission; maintaining proposal content libraries to support efficient responses
  • Identifying and pursuing opportunities for client expansion, cross-selling, and market visibility through events, sponsorships, and industry partnerships
  • Collaborating with Events Team to develop event strategies, coordinate attorney participation, and measure ROI
  • Leading BD onboarding for new laterals, including business planning and internal positioning
  • Overseeing creation and maintenance of marketing materials, practice descriptions, and attorney bios in collaboration with the Creative Team
  • Leveraging CRM (InterAction), experience databases, and financial data to track opportunities and support strategic decisions
  • Monitoring industry trends and contributing insights to support targeting and growth initiatives
  • Working closely with Regional Marketing Managers and cross-functional teams to align national and regional BD efforts


The successful candidate will demonstrate...



  • A bachelor's degree in related field or education/experience equivalent required
  • Success in professional services-related marketing and business development, including a minimum of five years of progressive business development and/or marketing experience
  • Strong coaching skills in developing business and marketing opportunities, including responding to RFPs, strategic planning, competitive intelligence, seminars, speaking engagements, sponsorships, professional networking, and social media
  • Ability to make persuasive presentations on business development topics; ability to develop and manage business development plans and sales pipelines
  • Experience with CRM system, preferably InterAction
  • Ability to oversee the work of others as needed and provide real time mentoring, coaching and feedback to junior team members.
  • Ability to cultivate strong relationships and foster a positive, engaging environment with a good sense of humor
  • Emotional intelligence by recognizing, understanding, and managing emotions, staying self-motivated, and empathetically navigating relationships; maintaining composure under pressure, adapting to challenges, and fosters a positive, collaborative work environment
  • Proven ability to collaborate across functional teams and manage through change, ensuring a cohesive, results-driven approach that supports business success
  • A client-focused attitude with a consultative approach to understanding and meeting needs; skilled in addressing sensitive inquiries or complaints effectively and in a timely manner
  • A commitment to delivering high-quality outcomes and ensuring exceptional client service and satisfaction
  • Ability to travel to various business development, department and firm events and/or meetings


Pay Range for Candidates in New York:

$140,000 - $155,000 per year

The range provided is the minimum and maximum salary that Venable in good faith believes at the time of this posting that it is willing to pay for the advertised position. Exact compensation will be determined based on individual candidate qualifications and location.

Pay Range for Candidates in Washington, DC:

$130,000 - $150,000 per year
