Position title:
Postdoctoral Scholar in Combinatorics and/or Algebraic Geometry
Salary range:
Commensurate with qualifications and experience. The posted UCSC salary scales set the minimum pay based on the individual's Experience Level, which is determined by the number of months of postdoctoral service at any institution. See the salary scale titled, Postdoctoral Scholar-Employee /Postdoctoral Scholar-Fellow / Postdoctoral Scholar-Paid Direct -Fiscal Year. A reasonable estimate for this position is $69,073 - $77,030.

Full-time (100%)
Anticipated start:
As soon as July 1, 2026 but no later than September 1, 2026. PhD must be in hand before to employment can begin.
Position duration:
Maximum Duration of Service in a Postdoctoral Title: Postdoctoral Scholar appointments are full-time and the initial appointment is for a minimum of two years, with the possibility of reappointment. The total duration of an individual's postdoctoral service may not exceed five years, including postdoctoral service at any institution.

Position description

Associate Professor Laura Escobar Vega in the Mathematics Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Combinatorics and/or Algebraic Geometry to start in the summer of 2026.

We are seeking a candidate with a demonstrated record of published research (including Ph.D. thesis) whose research interests align with those of Professor Escobar Vega. Broadly, these include the following areas: algebraic combinatorics and combinatorial algebraic geometry. The selected candidate will conduct research in one or more of the above fields and will collaborate with Professor Escobar Vega, other faculty members, and graduate students.

Highly motivated candidates who possess strong communication skills and who work well both independently and collaboratively are strongly encouraged to apply.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at the time the application is submitted)

  • PhD (or equivalent foreign degree) in mathematics or closely related field (applied mathematics, operations research, theoretical computer science, etc.). It is expected that the degree requirement must be completed by August 31, 2026.
  • Research experience in algebraic combinatorics or combinatorial algebraic geometry.
