Position Summary

The Senior Engineering Technologist position is the fourth level of the non-Engineering degreed technical support role. The Senior Engineering Technologist provides technical expertise to solve more complex problems, and leadership skills to manage work in a specific area of expertise, with minimal supervision. Employees in the Senior Engineering Technologist position are expected to develop advanced skills and work independently with increased latitude for un-reviewed work. This position is responsible for working with the EP Manager - Wildfire in maintaining wildfire mitigation plans and processes for the Power Grid Operations organization. Responsibilities focus on process and procedure upkeep; deployment of processes and procedures within distribution and transmission functions of Power Grid Operations; developing presentations for the wildfire program; and maintaining the tools and data sources used in the wildfire program.

Responsibilities

  • Some Tasks follow set guidelines or procedures

  • Employee has the authority to make significant choices and decisions without specific guidance or direction from the Manager

  • Applies technical expertise in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems in area of expertise

  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities

  • Conducts engineering and related studies to prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches with limited guidance

  • Strives to continually improve job-related, technical, and professional knowledge, skills and performance of self and junior engineers

  • Works as One to develop and promote positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities within group and cross work-group boundaries

  • Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Maintains accurate records and files

  • Participates in other assigned duties during emergency or storm events

  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

  • Storm duty required in and out of the zone. Overnight travel is required in and out of the zone.

Senior Engineering Technologist Basic Required Qualifications

  • Either 6+ years of relevant industry experience coupled with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 8+ years of experience and Associate Degree in Engineering Technology (or equivalent), or 12+ years equivalent experience without a degree.

  • Valid driver's license

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering Technology

  • In addition to desired degree, 5 plus years related work experience

  • Thorough knowledge of principles and practices of electrical power engineering

  • Familiarity with evaluating existing infrastructure and upgrading as needed to support customer development

  • Experience with three phase design, layout, and material selection for medium voltage power distribution systems

  • AutoCAD experience

  • Experience designing duct bank systems

  • Ability to ensure compliance with internal design standards and specifications

  • Requires high customer interaction and excellent communication

  • Ability to complete cost estimates and revenue calculations

  • Strong analytical skills

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Proficiency with MS Office applications

Additional Preferred Qualifications

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience in the utility industry.

  • Proficient in applying principlesof project management.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.
