Job Title: Sr. IT Systems Engineer Location: Detroit, MI (Hybrid) Reports To: Director of IT Operations Organization: Detroit Wayne Integrated Health Network (DWIHN) Position Summary The IT Systems Engineer is a critical member of the DWIHN IT Operations team, responsible for designing, supporting, and maintaining secure and resilient enterprise IT infrastructure. This includes Microsoft-based environments, network architecture, virtualization platforms, and cybersecurity systems. This role serves a government-regulated healthcare organization, requiring strict adherence to HIPAA, SOC 2, and NIST-based security frameworks. The engineer will provide technical leadership in systems design, incident response, disaster recovery, and ongoing infrastructure improvements. Key Responsibilities Systems Engineering & Administration
- Design, implement, and support enterprise infrastructure including Windows Server 2012-2022, Active Directory, Azure Entra ID, Office 365, and virtualization platforms.
- Administer and maintain SQL servers, network storage (SAN/NAS), and critical business applications.
- Develop baselines and technical standards for on-prem and cloud-based systems.
- Maintain group policy, Entra ID, Intune, and other user access controls, and role-based security in alignment with HIPAA and internal standards.
- Monitor system health, conduct performance tuning, apply patches, and coordinate lifecycle upgrades.
Security, Compliance & Monitoring
- Enforce cybersecurity best practices, including administration of firewalls, VPNs, MFA, anti-virus/EDR, and email security systems.
- Support security risk assessments, system hardening, and identity management through Windows AD / Entra ID.
- Perform regular audits of system access, configurations, and patch status to support HIPAA and SOC 2 compliance.
- Support business continuity through design and testing of backup and disaster recovery plans.
- Participate in and support Change Management processes, including planning, documentation, communication, and execution of infrastructure changes to minimize risk, ensure continuity of service, and maintain compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements.
Network & Infrastructure
- Administer LAN/WAN, Cisco switches, firewalls, VoIP systems, DNS, DHCP, BGP, and site-to-site VPNs.
- Monitor and optimize network performance, ensuring high availability and security.
- Install, configure, and troubleshoot hardware and software components across infrastructure.
Project & Cross-Team Collaboration
- Lead infrastructure-related projects and collaborate with vendors, departments, and stakeholders on IT initiatives.
- Provide documentation, system diagrams, and training for IT staff on new technologies or changes.
- Assist with IT roadmap planning, procurement strategy, and proposal writing under the direction of the Technology Manager.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management
Required Qualifications Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field
(Relevant experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.)
Experience:
- 10+ years hands-on experience in most of the following:
- Microsoft ecosystem (Azure, O365, Windows Server, Group Policy)
- Networking protocols and technologies (VLAN, DNS, DHCP, Cisco IOS)
- Virtualization and IaaS (Azure)
- Backup and disaster recovery systems
- Security systems (firewalls, anti-virus, email security)
Preferred Certifications
- Microsoft Certified: Windows Server / Azure Administrator / Entra ID
- Cisco CCNA / CCNP
- ITIL Foundation

- Reliable transportation required to travel throughout Wayne County and the State of Michigan.
