About the Job

Duties/Responsibilities:

10% Water Sampling
Collected water samples from designated sites to support experimental studies, ensuring proper preservation and transport for subsequent analysis.

50% Microalgae Experiments and Wastewater Treatment
* Conducted laboratory experiments using microalgae for the treatment of landfill leachate.
* Operated low-voltage electric field systems to prevent biofilm accumulation on electrodes.
* Measured key wastewater quality indicators, including total nitrogen (TN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), phosphate, and nitrate.
* Monitored the removal efficiency of nitrogen and tracked changes in microalgae and bacterial populations, chlorophyll concentration, and related biological parameters.

40% Data Processing, Analysis, and Interpretation
* Processed and analyzed experimental data to evaluate treatment performance and biological responses.
* Generated visualizations (graphs, charts) to present results clearly and effectively.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
BS/BA in engineering or environmental science and 1 years of related experience or equivalent combination a combination of education and work experience to equal five (5) years

Preferred Qualifications:
* BS in engineering or a related field such as environmental technology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, chemistry
* Experience working in a higher education research environment
* Advanced computer skills including experimental data analysis and academic drawing using Origin, Adobe illustrator, R software
* The ability to develop reports and academic papers based on experimental data
* Familiar with microalgae cultivation and wastewater treatment technologies, capable of conducting microalgae-based wastewater treatment experiments on designated wastewater streams

The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems Engineering (bbe.umn.edu) is an internationally renowned academic unit with the core mission of sustainable use of renewable agricultural and natural resources, and protection and enhancement of the environment.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $25.00; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
