Department: Ctr for Comparative Medicine
Salary/Grade: EXS/14

Job Summary:

Provides medical and surgical care for laboratory animals including anesthesia and surgical support for both large and small animals and gross necropsy evaluations as part of the program for animal health surveillance and disease control. Reviews protocols submitted by investigators as part of the IACUC review process, assists researchers in the development and preparation of IACUC protocols, and assists in the development of SOPs and other documents for CCM and the IACUC. Delivers various modes of training for CCM staff and others that use animals in research.

Please note: This position will require some travel between Chicago and Evanston campuses. This is an exempt position requiring occasional availability on some weekends and after normal working hours. This position requires shared on-call with the other veterinarians. Will require enrollment in the CCM occupational health program.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Implements the program for clinical evaluation and management of experimental animals requiring veterinary care.
    • Performs clinical examinations of incoming and colony animals.
    • Performs gross necropsy evaluations as part of the programs for animal health surveillance and disease control.
    • Provides anesthesia and surgical support for large and small animal surgery.
    • Implements the program for rodent colony health.
    • Participates in the rotating on-call schedule.
  • Reviews protocols submitted by Principal Investigators (PIs) involving animal use in research, teaching, and testing as part of the review by the Animal Care and Use Committee (ACUC). Assists researchers in the development and preparation of IACUC protocols.
  • Assists with the development and revision of Standard Operating Procedures, Policies and Guidelines for CCM and the IACUC.
  • Delivers lectures, laboratories, and other teaching and training as appropriate on the care and use of laboratory animals in research for CCM staff, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, investigators, laboratory personnel and other research personnel within Northwestern University.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned. May oversee the activities of the Animal Health Technicians assigned to the veterinarian's areas of responsibility.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from a college accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association or successful completion of the Education Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates program.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Hold a current and valid license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of formal postdoctoral training or one year of postdoctoral training plus one year of experience in the practice of institutional laboratory animal medicine (or other relevant experience). Working knowledge of United States laboratory animal regulatory requirements. Eligible to sit for the board exam in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine or foreign equivalent.

Target hiring range for this position will be between $135,000-$195,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data
