The Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (WVDL) is seeking a Facilities Manager to oversee operations at our Madison lab and support for our Barron, WI lab. This position is responsible for oversight of the Madison lab building and ensuring that it functions successfully. This includes general safe working conditions, environmental controls and efficient laboratory spaces including BSL-2 and BSL-3 labs. This position will also be responsible for preventatively maintaining the building's core functions. It offers a unique opportunity to remain hands-on while learning and managing advanced systems critical to laboratory operations.

This position will coordinate the maintenance and repair of essential building systems to ensure uninterrupted operations. This position will work closely with the WVDL Quality and Safety teams to maintain accreditation standards and compliance. Additionally, this position will collaborate with UW Facilities to optimize resources and enhance operational efficiency. This position is vital in supporting
the laboratory's mission to deliver high-quality diagnostics and exemplary customer service, promoting animal and public health and the vitality of the State and National agricultural economy.

A well-qualified candidate will have demonstrated excellent time management, organizational, and customer service skills in addition to operational support of a building and laboratory spaces.

Occasional after-hours or weekend emergency on-call duty may occur.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Minimizes institutional liability regarding the university's compliance with federal regulations and regulations governing environmental protection, the handling of hazardous materials and hazardous waste, and the use of chemical substances and materials
  • Ensures all protection systems such as fire panels, smoke/heat detectors, sprinkler systems, and pumps are maintained in accordance with the regulatory requirements and industry standards and ensures all emergency generators/power systems, rigging systems, and elevators are properly maintained in accordance with industry standards and are operational at all times
  • Establishes priorities for scheduled mechanical and electrical services within the area of responsibility, administering preventive maintenance programs for facilities, inspecting facilities to determine repair or replacement needs, and supervising the performance of emergency and routine maintenance on campus facilities within the area of responsibility
  • Coordinates and sometimes directly supervises the performance of emergency and routine maintenance on campus facilities
Unique Responsibilities:

  • Performs routine and non-routine facility inspections and monitors cleanliness.

  • Troubleshoots, escalates, and documents issues according to established policies and procedures.

  • Utilizes specialized equipment to repair and maintain complex machinery, equipment, and facility property to prevent further damage and ensure optimal operation.

  • Assists trades, crafts, vendors, and technical staff with construction, design, and operational maintenance as needed.


  • Ensures that the work performance of employees in the area of responsibility and maintenance zones or sections as a whole meet university standards and expectations
Tasks:

  • Comply with WVDL safety and quality requirements (see Quality and Safety manuals).

  • Coordinate the performance of emergency and routine maintenance.

  • Ensure the proper maintenance of power systems, generators, hoists, elevators and other essential building equipment.

  • Ensure all protection systems are maintained in accordance with regulatory requirement and industry standards.

  • Manage the WVDL surplus equipment (SWAP) program.

  • Order and maintain inventory supplies for custodial and facilities.

  • Work with UW Facilities (FPM) and UW Purchasing to develop bid specifications for contract work.

  • Work with custodial and laundry vendors to ensure consistent and reliable service.

  • Responsible for the security, custodial, grounds, recycling, repairs, maintenance, and utility services of facilities to ensure that they meet the needs of the WVDL.


  • Works with procurement services and planning, design and construction as appropriate in developing bid specifications and contract documents for contract work to be performed, obtaining, reviewing, and analyzing estimates from reputable vendors, and preparing the bid tabulation sheets and associated paperwork to support the request

Department: UWMSN | WVDL | Administration (Paul Benedict)

Compensation: $72,000 min. starting salary. The salary is based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3 years of experience and/or familiarity with the operational support of a building including coordination of building maintenance.

  • Experience with and/or ability to perform general troubleshooting and/or repair of systems that may include electrical, electronic, HVAC, mechanical, plumbing components, refrigeration, steam and chilled water distribution, and/or environmental controls.

  • Experience and ability to use tools for minor in-house repairs.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Skill and commitment to providing quality customer service (e.g., responding to inquiries, providing administrative and/or technical support, ensure follow-up and follow-through, adaptability, flexibility, communicating with internal and external customers).

  • Organizational and time-management skills that include: problem-solving, multi-tasking, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines while paying attention to accuracy and details.

  • Ability to plan/develop projects; delegate tasks; facilitate/monitor project progress; troubleshoot obstacles; organize complex tasks; implement and adhere to deadlines; maintain records.

  • Experience working with building safety protocols and building codes.

  • Experience working in a laboratory building and with laboratory equipment.


Education: Associate's Degree Preferred
