Summary of Position

An integral member of the site EHS Team whose primary responsibilities are to ensure a safe and quality working environment by providing individual contributor and advanced leadership behavior to successfully implement and maintain a world class EHS Management systems. Activities for meeting this objective would include, but not be limited to EHS concepts such as: compliance and best practices auditing, floor observation, incident investigations, corrective action analysis and follow-up, committee and team participation/leadership, leading and participating in peer collaborative efforts, interacting with up line management staff for recommending and resolving EHS solutions, providing instructor-based training and coaching of EHS values and other techniques required to maintain a high integrity World Class EHS management systems.

Essential Functions

  • The Senior EHS Specialist will serve as site champion for assigned EHS Management system elements or programs in addition to these primary systems: internal auditing, emergency response system management, document control systems, change control systems, plant specific policy development, property loss systems, injury management, EHS training and general regulatory compliance.
  • Expected and accepted behavior for a senior level EHS staff member is to not only complete assignments but also embrace the continuous improvement philosophy by striving to analyze,
  • identify and correct issues in order to improve the EHS system and achieve world class EHS system status.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors company EHS programs and policies to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local EHS regulations and maintains liaison with appropriate regulatory agencies to support compliance activity.
  • Maintains safety equipment inventory by performing, developing or administering system/program to ensure necessary periodic safety inspections are completed.
  • Must maintain operational compliance with US and international regulatory agencies and guidelines (i.e. OSHA, EPA, FDA, EU, HC, TGA, PIC/S, ISO, USP, NRC, cGMP, etc.).
  • Monitors and conducts chemical hazardous waste removal activities (solid waste, RCRA waste etc..) in compliance with RCRA 40 CFR- Hazardous Waste Management.
  • Recommends corrective action and ensures action is taken where environmental health and safety hazards exist.
  • Partner with assigned corporate resources as well as third party insurance/legal resources for the administration of worker's compensation and workplace injury case management program.
  • Participate in or lead corporate EHS efforts for policy making, project implementation and other cooperative efforts.
  • Develop, and mentor others in developing EHS skills and capabilities.
  • Ensure a safe and quality working environment through training, awareness, and compliance to company policy and Federal/State/Local regulations as well as ensuring that all required records are prepared and maintained properly.
  • Investigate and prepare required reports of EHS system performance including but not limited to investigation reports, injury reports, insurance claims, performance metric reports, etc.
  • Conduct and or lead exposure monitoring and medical surveillance for chemical and noise hazards as required by regulations, company policy or best industry practices.
  • Participate in plant and department level Lean and/or continuous improvement activities.
  • Ensure accountability, transparency, cross-functionally and effective communication within the EHS Department while ensuring that information is timely, clear and accurate.
  • Participate as assigned leader or member of company/EHS sponsored internal and external committees.
  • Provide input on plant equipment installation, start-up operations and other project related activities.
  • Supply the highest level of internal and external customer service while having the ability to diplomatically challenge established procedures and systems.
  • Verify, review and make appropriate changes if needed, to any controlled document pertinent to area of responsibility.
  • Serve as an active participant in the site Emergency Response Plans and organized response teams.

Requirements

  • Bachelor Degree required in Occupational, Safety and Health, Engineering or related safety/technical/science field. Advanced degree (MS, MBA) and/or professional certification (CSP, CHMM, CIH) preferred.
  • Five or more years of relevant experience required.
  • Experience in an FDA regulated manufacturing environment is preferred.
  • Experience with radiation protection programs and compliance with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations is preferred.
  • Internal and external audits/ inspections for regulatory and company policy compliance.
  • Working knowledge of radiation protection programs and compliance with NRC regulations.
  • Excellent working knowledge of Title 29, Code of Federal Regulations Part 1910 and Part 1926 and Titles 40 & 42 Code of Federal Regulations.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Change agent with the ability to influence and interact at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to manage and excel in workload situations with multiple priorities and timelines.
  • Excellent decision making, problem solving & analytical skills.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft office applications required.
  • Knowledge of EHS Management Systems (VPP, ANSI, ISO, RCMS, etc.).
  • Experience in administering hazardous materials and hazardous waste management systems.
  • Competency, knowledge and or certification in continuous improvement, and Lean Manufacturing systems.



Working Conditions:



  • Willingness to work in plant producing radioactive materials and requiring all employees to participate in safety programs designed to minimize potential and/or actual exposure levels.
  • Responsibilities include the ability to lift up to 70 pounds, kneeling, crouching, twisting the upper body, walking, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, reaching, must be able to physically negotiate stairs and evacuation ladders with or without accommodation, wear and operate safety equipment, enter vessels, and inspect equipment.
  • Material handling devices (e.g., hand truck, fork truck, and conveyors) are used when possible, however, use of proper lifting and movement techniques is necessary to prevent injury.
  • Must be willing to wear a variety of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and hearing protection as needed.
  • May be required to sit or stand for long periods of 8+ hours a day while performing duties.
  • Must possess good hand-eye coordination; close attention to detail is required.
  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors with exposure to mechanical/moving parts, hazards including corrosive, flammable and toxic material, dust, dirt, odors, and irritants.
  • Willingness to complete safety training within allotted timeframes, and work in a team-based environment.
  • Must be able to work outside of regular work hours, including off shift, weekend, and holiday work as business needs require.
