The Center for the Study of Liberal Democracy (CSLD) invites applications for a part-time position of Assistant Director. Housed in the University of Wisconsin Law School, the CSLD serves the full UW-Madison community, seeking to advance intellectual diversity on campus by exploring arguments for and against liberal principles and institutions, as well as the study of texts written by exponents and critics of the liberal tradition.

In cooperation with the Director, the Assistant Director is responsible for day-to-day operations of the CSLD including programming, development, strategic planning, intra-University relations, relations with Wisconsin State legislators, and relations with the national community of scholars, institutes, and foundations with similar pursuits. This position will coordinate donor relations and development as well as write grant proposals and manage fund allocation. Event programming and invitation of relevant guests will be under the purview of the Assistant Director. This position will also be responsible for overseeing visiting scholars, and post-graduate, graduate, and undergraduate fellows. The Assistant Director will report to the Director of the CSLD.

Position will initially be for one year. Position will be extended for a second year dependent upon performance, available funding and department need. After the second year, this position may become a renewable (ongoing) appointment again dependent upon performance, available funding and department need.

Position can be 50% time (20 hours/week) up to 75% time (30 hours/week) dependent on successful candidate's availability. Schedule agreement will be made at the time of hire.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • May exercise supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 FTE or equivalent employees
  • Contributes to the preparation of proposals for funding and/or funding continuation from outside sponsors
  • May assist in the development and monitoring of the unit or program budget and approve unit expenditures
  • Identifies workflow needs, contributes to the development of strategic and operational solutions, allocates resources, and implements new or revised unit operational policies and procedures
  • Plans, implements, executes, and evaluates existing strategies and objectives for a program and makes recommendations to unit leadership for program or function enhancement
  • Leads the development and preparation of periodic reports and financial statements, and records progress, status, or other special reports for leadership or external agencies
  • Schedules logistics and secures resources for program activities across multiple work units to ensure optimum efficiency and compliance with appropriate policies, procedures, and specifications

Compensation:

Salary will be commensurate with successful candidate's prior experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

A Bachelor's degree or higher in humanities or social sciences is required.

Strong communication and organizational skills required.

Preferred Qualifications:

PhD in political theory or public law preferred (but not required).

Fundraising and/or event coordination experience highly preferred.
Experience with grant proposals and/or fund management preferred.
