The primary responsibility of the Senior Design and Development Engineer will be to support the GATX Engineering Technical Services Group's mission by providing mechanical engineering stress analysis, working with engineering structural analysis consultants, provide project management, and engineering support in executing rail car purchasing, modifications and/or repairs. Provide field troubleshooting services in cases involving structural or component failure and other operational issues. Lastly, the role will be a resource for support for technical/analytical guidance to GATX International teams.



Responsibilities

    Perform stress and mechanical analysis using classical methods, FEA, fatigue/fracture mechanics, and materials science.
  • Develop and oversee design drawings for new builds, modifications, and repairs.
  • Define efficient analysis scopes and communicate findings clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Lead engineering projects from concept through execution, coordinating with internal teams and external partners.
  • Conduct field inspections and troubleshooting for structural failures and operational issues.
  • Support global engineering teams and provide technical guidance across departments.
  • Interface with regulatory bodies, vendors, and customers to ensure compliance and performance.


Qualifications

  • Mechanical or Structural Engineer with a B.S. degree and 10+ years of experience in design, analysis, and project management across industrial sectors.
  • Engineering Analysis: Expertise in structural, stress/fatigue, and fracture mechanics; skilled in interpreting and creating mechanical drawings and bills of material.
  • Project Leadership: Managed multiple design-to-production projects, overseeing budgets, timelines, and resources.
  • Technical Tools:
    • 7+ years in FEA (ANSYS preferred)
    • 10+ years in 3D CAD (Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD)
    • Programming experience (FORTRAN, Visual Basic)
    • Advanced Excel and Microsoft Office proficiency
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Familiar with DOT, TC, AAR, and international engineering standards.

This is a hybrid position that requires the employee to work in the office at least three days a week throughout the year.

Min

USD $90,400.00/Yr.


Max

USD $114,600.00/Yr.
This role may be eligible to participate in the Company's short-term incentive plan, the details of which will be provided to the applicant upon hire.
This range is a reasonable estimate and takes into account several factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including, but not limited to, geographic location, skill set, experience, education, training, internal equity, and other business needs.
