The role - what you'll do

Barr is seeking a transmission engineer to join our Minneapolis team. In this role, you will support our power delivery group by contributing to the design and engineering of high-voltage transmission and distribution lines for electric utilities and renewable energy clients. You'll work with multidisciplinary project teams to develop design documents, specifications, and drawings for wood and steel pole structures, as well as perform foundation design and calculations.

The ideal candidate for this position is a proactive problem solver with strong technical skills, has a collaborative mindset, and is an eager learner. You thrive in a high-energy environment, are client-focused, and demonstrate initiative and adaptability in meeting project goals.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Transmission line design and engineering: use PLS-CADD software to design transmission lines ranging from 69kV to 345kV, helping ensure technical accuracy and compliance with industry standards.

  • Specification development: create detailed construction and material specifications for wood and steel pole structures, supporting safe and efficient field implementation.

  • Foundation design: perform drilled pier foundation design and embedment depth calculations, contributing to the structural integrity of transmission systems.

  • Drawing production and review: produce and review design drawings including plan and profile views, framing, and assembly details to support project execution.

  • Field assignments: participate in short-term, out-of-town field assignments as needed to support project delivery and client engagement.

  • Software and documentation: use Microsoft Office and other engineering tools to document work, communicate with teams, and manage project data effectively.

  • Team collaboration: work closely with engineers and project managers in a dynamic, multidisciplinary environment that values initiative, teamwork, and continuous learning.

About the opportunity

  • Compensation: anticipated range of $65,000-80,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors. Employees in this position may also be eligible for a discretionary cash bonus based on team and individual performance. This position is classified as exempt (salaried) under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position is based out of Barr's Minneapolis, Minnesota, office.

  • Travel expectations: up to 15 percent domestic fieldwork, with an average of two to three days of continuous job site presence.

  • Work environment: ability to work in locations that may feature rough terrain typical of construction/manufacturing/rural outdoor sites with limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Candidates must be able to perform job duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Physical requirements for the role may include:

  • Ability to conduct fieldwork in varying outdoor conditions (e.g., heat, cold, rain, uneven terrain).

  • Must be able to lift and carry equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

  • Capable of standing, walking, kneeling, or crouching for extended periods.

  • Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by site conditions.

About you - required core competencies

  • Education: bachelor's degree in civil/structural or related discipline

  • Licenses/certifications: Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certified or ability to obtain within one year.

  • Willingness and ability to travel.

  • Software: familiarity with AutoCAD, Excel, and Word. Willingness to learn new programs such as PLS-CADD software.

  • Driver's license: possession of a current, valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
