Position Summary
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world's preeminent scientific and cultural institutions, and has as its mission to discover, interpret and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education and exhibition.

The Museum's Microscopy and Imaging Facility ( MIF) is seeking a full-time Laboratory Manager to manage their key interdepartmental research facility. The Manager is responsible for operating and maintaining the laboratory facility and its instruments and equipment; supervising the laboratory technician(s) and leading programs for use of equipment and facilities, user training and support. The Manager reports to the Dean of Science and leads certain administrative duties related to lab operation, staff supervision, procurement of supplies, instrument contracts and maintenance and budget management.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Operate the MIF facility within expectations, ensuring that all aspects remain in good working condition. Report facilities problems to the Museum's Facilities and Operations teams. Arrange for service of equipment by internal/external vendors and/or manufacturers.
  • Directly supervise the laboratory technician(s). Determine work schedules, assign tasks, monitor performance and perform annual performance evaluations.
  • Coordinate instrument scheduling according to lab policies.
  • Ensure that all lab regulations and procedures are implement and followed.
  • Ensure that general lab appearance, cleanliness and orderliness are maintained at all times.
  • Maintain C-14 certification in the use of hazardous chemicals.
  • Work with the Health & Safety officer on certification and inspection of the laboratory chemical hood.
  • Work with the Office of the Dean of Science on purchases, travel approval, monitoring spending and forecasting future needs.
  • Act as a general consultative resource for lab users (i.e., curators, research scientists, students, postdoctoral fellows).
  • Communicate regularly with the Dean of Science on the status of the instruments and facility, feedback from users and strategies for acquiring equipment upgrades or replacements.
  • Assist with training lab users and staff in basic equipment operation, use of computers and software and safety procedures to ensure users can gain the experience necessary to operate the instruments independently when required. This may include sample preparation, use of workstations and associated software and proper data handling, among other tasks.
  • Work with Procurement, the Office of General Counsel and the Office of the Dean of Science to execute service contracts, scheduling and application of preventative maintenance.
  • Communicate regularly with the Dean of Science on the status of the instruments and facility, gathering feedback from users and developing strategies for acquiring equipment upgrades or replacements.


The expected salary range for the Laboratory Manager is $75,000/annual - $80,000/annual. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of our dedicated and diverse community.

Pay will be determined based on several factors. The hiring range for the position at commencement is based on the type of work and the scope of responsibilities. The salary and placement offered is based on a number of individualized factors, including, but not limited to, skills, knowledge, training, education, credentials, areas of specialization and depth and scope of experience.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in biological or physical sciences.
  • One year of full-time experience performing electron microscopy, electron-beam instrument detection/analysis systems.
  • Experience operating and maintaining scanning electron beam instruments, microanalysis equipment and computer hardware/software.
  • Experience with computer tomography (CT).

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in a related field.
Physical Demands

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
  • Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
  • Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
  • Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.

    • Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
    • Climbing: Ascending or descending physical structures.
    • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently. May include any of the following:

      • Pushing: Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force to thrust forward, downward or outward.
      • Pulling: Using upper extremities to exert force in order to drag, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
      • Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position.
