Position Summary

The Director of Patient Safety oversees the implementation and management of patient safety programs across an entire healthcare system. The director leads the development and implementation of strategies to create a culture of safety and minimize errors across the entire healthcare system. This role involves fostering a high-reliability organization (HRO) by implementing continuous improvement methodologies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting a culture of safety among all staff. This role requires strong leadership, analytical, and communication skills, as well as a deep understanding of patient safety science, psychological safety and performance improvement methodologies. The director leads the development and execution of strategies to enhance operational partnership to improve patient safety, patient and family relations, and a high reliability culture. Hospital-based leaders may have a dual matrixed reporting structure.

Responsibilties

  • Provide leadership for the high reliability and patient safety initiatives across the entire healthcare system.

  • Collaborate with executive leadership and various departments to develop, implement, and sustain high reliability processes and outcomes.

  • Ensure a comprehensive and effective patient safety program that prioritizes preventing failures, leveraging the science of safety and human performance, and implementing strategies to reduce healthcare-associated harm.

  • Oversee standardized approaches to adverse event investigation and analysis, including root cause analyses (RCAs) and apparent cause analyses (ACAs), as well as collaborating to develop proactive mitigation efforts and innovative strategies such as FMEA and global triggers.

  • Foster a culture of safety and high reliability by promoting psychological safety, event reporting, encouraging participation in patient safety and quality initiatives, and partnering with organizational leaders to address opportunities.

  • Facilitate education for all levels of the organization on patient safety improvement concepts and processes, including HRO principles, National Patient Safety Goals, and other best practices.

  • Work collaboratively with medical, clinical and administrative departments to promote a culture of safety and improve patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in nursing or healthcare-related field required

  • Certification in specialty area required

  • Eight (8) years' previous experience and demonstrated skills in progressive management roles, in both a managerial and supervisory capacity

  • Eight (8) years' previous experience and demonstrated skills in patient safety and HRO

  • Extensive experience in process improvement methodologies

  • Strong program management, planning and execution skills

  • Experience with electronic health records, data analysis, and reporting systems

Pay and Benefit Expectations

We provide a comprehensive benefits package, including competitive salary, medical, dental and retirement benefits and paid time off. As required by various pay transparency laws, we share a competitive range of compensation for candidates hired into each position. The pay scale is $158,434.00 - $219,960.00 USD. However, pay is influenced by factors specific to applicants, including but not limited to: skill set, level of experience, and certification(s) and/or education. If this position is associated with a union contract, pay will be reflective of the appropriate step on the pay scale to which the applicant's years of experience align.
