The Role

Providence St. Vincent Medical Center (PSVMC) is a 539-licensed bed tertiary acute care teaching hospital. PSVMC is staffed with approximately 5000 caregivers with about 50% represented by three unions. In addition to the hospital, the grounds include physicians' medical office buildings, day care center, extensive parking structures and research facilities.

The Chief Operating Officer is responsible for the overall operations of the hospital including facility planning, recruitment and retention of staff, supervision of significant clinical services and, in the absence of the Chief Executive, direction of the hospital. The COO may have accountability for regional work as assigned by the Chief Executive and/or Oregon Chief Executive.

The Chief Operating Officer is an integral member of the Oregon West and North Service Area Executive Team, PSVMC Administrative Team, leads the PSVMC Administrative team, leads the PSVMC operations, and is a member of a number of other committees and task forces to improve services both regionally and at PSVMC.

MAJOR CHALLENGES:



  1. Leading the development and implementation of Providence St Vincent Medical Center's key initiatives and daily operations.
  2. Expansion of PSVMC buildings, parking structures, and remodeling existing facilities to provide for a working environment that promotes excellence in patient care and support services, teaching and research.
  3. As part of the leadership team, maintains the excellent reputation of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center by assuring the satisfaction of patients, physicians, and caregivers.
  4. Creating a work environment that attracts and retains skilled staff and physicians.
  5. Provide coordination between acute care operations and PSA integrated services.
  6. Balancing priorities.


Essential Functions



  • Provides hospital leadership and directs assigned departments and associated functions. Direct line accountability currently includes all operative and procedural areas and diagnostic imaging, though these accountabilities may evolve to meet the needs of the ministry. Ensures effective operations integration for all assigned areas of responsibility. Facilitates effective decisions and priority setting. Delegates appropriately allow decision making at the appropriate level. Also, has dotted line responsibility for effective integration of service line and shared business activities (for example, laboratory services, pharmacy, etc.)
  • Provides direction for the development of short- and long-term strategic initiatives for the stable growth and cost-effective operation of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center by providing leadership for hospital operations.
  • Chairs the PSVMC Operations and Quality Leadership team, which is responsible for developing and implementing the critical strategic initiatives for PSVMC.
  • Participates actively in strategic planning and budgetary formation in conjunction with the Chief Executive, Chief Medical Officer, Chief Nursing Officer, Chief Finance Officer, and site managers to ensure strong and focused operational and financial management of the acute care business.
  • Supports physician partners by knowing and understanding the medical staff issues and working with physicians in order to provide appropriate operational environment necessary for optimum physician practice. Coordinates medical direction, working closely with program directors of clinical programs to attain prescribed results.
  • Responsible for coordination or support of regulatory agency compliance readiness and audit checks, as assigned by the Chief Executive.
  • Organizes and leads various leadership forums, which may include Admin Council and Friday Forum, among others.
  • Responsible for various infrastructure functions as assigned by the Chief Executive.
  • Plans and leads routine caregiver communication forums to better inform site caregivers of relevant information concerning Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Serves as a strong team leader for all employee relation activities.
  • Ensures the development of policies and programs that are economically feasible as well conducive to the personal and professional development of the PSA and hospital.
  • Interacts with and assists in shaping directions with the various key constituencies of Providence St. Vincent Medical Center patients and community, physicians, Providence Health System in Oregon, competitors and payors.
  • Provides leadership and vision for PSVMC so as to achieve improvement in value and service, flexibility and innovation of operations, integrated delivery, and partnership with Medical Staff.


Qualifications



  • Master's Degree in Hospital Management, Business Administration, or related area of study. Or equivalent educ/experience.
  • In lieu of a Master's degree, other relevant advanced degree. For equivalent education/experience: two years of experience may be substituted for each year of education. However, the most preferable candidates will have both education and experience.
  • 10 or more years of Increasingly responsible experience in healthcare and hospital management.
  • Extensive knowledge of the healthcare industry including the operation of a hospital, extensive knowledge of business practices in healthcare.
  • Knowledge of the Mission, Core Values, Operating Principles and philosophy of the Providence Health System and how to apply them to daily operations.
  • Knowledge of financial planning, human resources, marketing, organizational behavior and customer service.
  • Knowledge of facility planning and maintenance, knowledge of laboratory and pharmacy operations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form.
  • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with executives, managers, physicians, caregivers, patients and visitors.
  • Ability to successfully lead a team.
  • Ability to represent PSVMC in public settings.
  • Ability to implement quality improvement methods and ideas.
  • Ability to use analytical skills to solve complicated problems.
  • Ability to hold effective meetings.
